My quest for more highs/mids...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I found the horn tweeter in my Ashdown 410 a bit harsh, so I removed it. However, I still want some smooth highs, but without the sound being piercing.

Is there perhaps a paper/aluminium cone driver that I can put in place of this tweeter, or even in a separate box?

I have a surround-sound speaker with 2 x (3 inch?) drivers in it. I plugged it directly into the amp at medium volume, with the lows/lowmids cut off. It sounds like something that would sound nice combined with my main cabs.

However, the drivers are rated at 5w RMS each @ 8 ohms, so I can't parallel them with my main cabs (because of power handling, and ohm rating). I know they seem like tinny little speakers from what I've said, but they have a very full sound for the size.

Could I maybe run this box in place of the horn, series to the high-pass cap? (obviously I wouldn't run the box inside another cab )

Is 5w quite small for a tweeter/mid in a 300w RMS 4 ohm rig?

If I'm going mad, just say

it'll blow a 5W mid speaker. it may even catch fire .

IMO, you'd need at least a 6.5" midrange speaker (or two) and a crossover to do it right. i have no idea if your cab has room for that though.

Bah, my cab definitely doesn't have the room

Will the mid/high box be subjected to more power, the lower it is high-passed?

Hmm, do you know what frequency it would have to be high-passed to survive with a 300w head?

Thanks man.

Yes. Have you considered the equivalent of a "Bright Box" - a separate small enclosure to house a mid-driver and crossover?

I really really want a Trace Elliot Bright Box, but with no info on the interwebz, and none on eBay, I'm stuck.

I've looked at the Hartke 405 as well, but I can't find any for sale!

I thought, I'll make one out of this speaker, but I don't know if the rating is a bit low

Search up the fEARful mid/high topbox, "headcase" I think it's called. That's pretty much top of the line as far as those things go but you could do something like it with a 6 or two with built in passive crossover with a "low out" for your 410.
