My SWR horn keeps crapping out...

Sign in to disble this ad
I run a Genz Benz 6.0 shuttle max, with an SWR goliath 3 8ohm along with A Genz Benz 4ohm ls- 410 for low end. The Genz Benz head puts out 600 watts at 4 ohms. The horn in the SWR keeps blowing its crossover fuse. Would getting another 8ohm cab fix this problem? I was thinking of selling the Genz Benz 410 and buying an SWR Big Ben. Any thoughts?

are you goosing the treble on your amp or active treble on your bass? also, do you have the l pad attenuator in the back of the amp for the tweeter much past 12 o'clock? that fuse protects the horn, and unless there is an issue with your cab, i think you're hitting it with too much treble.

If you like the sound of the 210, I don't think you'll like the big ben. It's not all that good at mids. sounds neat with a 210 or 410, but kinda "eh" by itself, and as an SWR fan, I can tell you there are much better 18s on the market if you really feel you need one.

i use a really really similar set up as you will see in my sig. and i have never blown my horn up. although like IvanMike stated, check your attenuator in the back of the amp for the tweeter, if you have one. if its much past noon...youll want to turn down your trebs or just back off the attenuator itself. small adjustments in this case might make all the difference in the world. and if you use effects pedals....maybe adjust the trebs on those as well.

good luck =)

Are you replacing with the correct protective device? You might give the folks at SWR a call and double-check this.

Ironic

I've never blown a crossover fuse in my life, then picked up a Goliath IV the other day (used) and ... no horn when I got home. Worked when I tried it at the seller's house, though. Then I noticed he had the attenuator cranked to about 4 o'clock (he never used the horn -- only cranked it when I asked him to) and pulled the panel: blown fuse. Yep -- pushing your high end (especially if you have active electronics) will send too much through the horn (lowers the impedance when you start pushing high mids at a high level though the horn) and you can blow it. Try working your mids a little more and you might achieve satisfactory result (especially if you're like me and hate mids).
