Neat TC feature I found out about last night!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been running my RH450 into a Berg AE410 for a couple of years now and to date, well until last night, never had an issue.
So I am at rehearsal last night and we are about two minutes into "Tie your mother down" and my amp cuts out! I'm like what the*&^*!
The lights are all on, but no sound... then I notice that the display is showing a "P". Hmm... I wonder what that could mean... Power or Protection.
So, we do what every modern day musican does, we google! TC web site shows that the "P" in the display means protection mode... I wonder why it went into protection? A little down the list TC advises you check you cabinet connections so I have a look... ( I am running an RS 210 and an old Traynor 115 cab at rehearsal and I am pretty sure that no one in the drummers house has touched my gear) but low and behold, the 1/4 inch speaker cable had found it's way half way out of the 115. No idea how that happened, but I plugged it back in, fired up the amp and voila... I'm back in business!
So thanks TC for that great feature and boy am I ever glad I didn't follow my first instinct and toss the amp against the wall!
On another note, I have been playing active basses through the rig since I got it and recently have been playing my new 4003 through it and I gotta say that the amp seems to prefer passive instruments vs active, from a tone perspective. It just seems to shine much more with a passive bass than an active one.

Glad ya found it, Joe. Had a similar thing happen to me with the Little Mark II in my 121H combo. I wanted to see what the 15" in my old Trace sounded like as an extension cab, in addition to the 12" in the combo (I can unplug the 15" from the Trace head). I'm ashamed to admit this, but I unthinkingly plugged the LMII into the Trace head (LMII speaker out into the Trace speaker jack, instead of running a line from the Trace speaker line into the speaker In on the LMII). Duh. The LMII cut off---nothing, no lights, no sound. OMG, I about had a heart attack before I realized how dumb I was. Hooked it up right and presto, all worked like normal. Sounded good, too. Of course, there's no screen to tell me what the problem was, but it wasn't hard to realize what it was. Whew! Protection Mode to the rescue.

Oh, and I have noticed that the 1/4" connectors on my Markbass gear aren't very tight, it seems. But the Little Mark II and new Little Mark III that I just bought only have one SpeakOn-1/4" connection on the back. So, when I use an extension it HAS to be 1/4". I don't know why they don't put two back there.

If one of your cabs has parallel speakons you can simply daisy chain them from that single Speakon. Head to cab, cab to 2nd cab.

It's easy enough to swap a 1/4" jack for a speakon .

You're probably right, but given that cab set up doesn't leave the practice space, I'll probably just double check the connections each time, from here on in...

Not always. Sometimes the jackplate contains a single PC board with the crossover components and a PC-mount 1/4" jack.

I've used 1/4" all my life and all my heads use 1/4" jacks and I see no reason to change until such time I get a head that does over 500w, which will likely be in the next 50 years

I'm so Ol' school...

I'da never thunk to Google that issue.

But I do use/own some "real store bought" and a couple home-made speakon cables, so I'm kinda of a "modern" "rocker", I reckon, and not a "moc-ker".

But I do still own and use some Mars Music store, 1/4", 3ft speaker cables I bought as they were going outta bidness in Southwest Houston. They're still tight; and work great.

I've seen the way you move, though, Jimmy, and one of these days, you're gonna pull somethin'.

GB, that's why I put my rig as far back as possible

Munji, you do realize that so far the new millenium has pretty well sucked, don't you?

Duke, I'm holding out for a hybrid Micro VR

Do you think Ampeg will make such an amp as the hybrid Micro VR? Sound sweet!

Well Zane the head engineer for Ampeg told me he's got a lot of tricks up his sleeve coming up...maybe they wouldn't bother with a hybrid Micro VR, but I'd bet money they're going to have a hybrid PF500 before long. Got no inside info on it or anything, but it would only make sense.

BTW, sorry for getting a little off topic here. I'll try to pull it back onto the TC topic. And I won't even bust balls about the wattage thing.
