Need a 2nd cab for a Streamliner 900

Sign in to disble this ad
I went for the 900 on the basis that it's all the headroom I'll ever need and now I need to round out what will (hopefully) be my last rig for an awfully long time. Pre-S900 my "loud" rig was:

Markbass SA450 -> Epifani UL112 -> Barefaced Compact

Most of the time though I only used one cab or the other but with the two cabs I had 3 rigs I could call on. The problem is that the UL112 ain't gonna handle the juice from the S900 so I need another cab if I ever really need to open the taps. (I know it can if I'm careful but I just don't want to have to worry about it.)

So I'm in the market for another cab to go with the S900 and the Compact and get me back to having three set ups at my disposal.

Any suggestions? It must be:

1) 8 ohm load
2) light
3) available in the UK
4) able to handle the S900's power (500 watts @ 8 ohms, 900 watts into the 2 cab 4 ohm load)

The only thing I can think of that ticks all the boxes is a Barefaced Midget. (I've ruled out another Compact as I don't get the 3-in-1 thing with 2 identical cabs.) Alex @ Barefaced is confident that a Midget + Compact stack will happily take 1,000 watts. It looks like a no brainer but I thought I'd throw this out there in case there was some other option I'd overlooked.

I would decide which of the two cabs you like the best, and then buy another one. If you add an identical cab to the rig, you will get 'more of what you already like'... no surprises'. IMO.

Yeah ... I can see the logic in that. The problem is I will always be worrying about caning the UL112. Alex reckons the Midget and Compact should be fine together but I was trying to see if there were any other cabs out there that I hadn't thought of.

Anyway ... looks like I'm headed down the Midget route.

+1 to the 2 matching cab suggestion. It's always the best choice.

One question, have you actually tried the STM-900 with either of those cabs?

I own a Compact and by all accounts the Midget is voiced pretty much the same aside from having a little less low end extension.

I will give it a go with the UL112 tonight, but to be honest given it's RMS power handling it's not going to be a regular option for me. I am the kind of person who will get paranoid about it on a gig and worry about listening for sounds of a straining cab rather than actually focusing on playing.

On the "more of the same" point ... I'm trying to get to a stage of 3 rigs for the price of one (ie two different cabs) so TBH I'd ruled out the idea of a 2nd Compact.
