Need 8 inch replacement for Ampeg 4x8

Sign in to disble this ad
I picked up an Ampeg Classic Series 4x8 at a local Goodwill for 89.99. Nice shape but I got it home and one of the 8 inchers is a fart machine. You can see it excurd much farther out than the other three along with the buzz tone. It sounds really good otherwise and its size and sound really suit my three piece band needs at this time. Are there any sources for these particular 8 inch speakers or a suitable substitute?

Pull speaker from cab. Put stamped numbers or letters on frame/magnet assembly into google search bar. Profit.

I also thought it may be interesting to anyone that owns one of these that the model number for the cab itself is I48I.

Only a few hits and one from a previous sale on TB. I believe a cat peed on the one that has failed.

It was likely made by eminence. Try emailing emi. customer support with the numbers off the speaker. They can help source one or get you the specs to compare other available replacements. Have you tried contacting Ampeg?

I looked on the Emi sight and saw nothing in their bass drivers that was 8 inch. I will try Ampeg but wonder how fun that will be for older equipment?

Nice Goodwill score! I've never heard of anyone getting bass gear out of them. My brother found an early 80's Tubescreamer for $3, and a Ross Phasor for $4.

If you're not gigging with it, or using it as a main rehearsal cab, I'd just find something close in wattage with the correct impedance.

If the speakers are 8 ohm each (you need to measure one of them), and the cabinet is 8 ohm, then they are wired in a series/parallel configuration. It is not good practice to wire mis-matched speakers in series, so you should be looking at a PAIR of new speakers if you cannot procure the exact replacement part.

Since you paid so little for the cabinet, you probably want to stay cheap on new speakers. I suggest a pair of these:

Studio Pro WH8 8" Woofer Accordian Surround

Ignore the Xmax numbers and accept the fact that you have a nice 4x8 with good midrange punch for a very good price.

The beta may be suitable. I've emailed eminence before with numbers off old speakets I've come acros and they've always been helpful. I'd do that rather than just look at their site of new offerings. They'll get you what specs they can as long as it's not something proprietary that's still in production. Use those to compare with replacements that are available. You may still end up with one oddball speaker in there but the closer in spec it is to the others, the better.
