Great - I am also interested in this - I own three 421As in a couple of old cabinets that may need a proper reconing. I know that there is a really good speaker repair place out here called "Orange County Speakers", I think that has a good reputation.

Comments?

Thanks Guys

15" Altec 421, 421-8, 421A (Aftermarket parts) $115.00 + S&H
15" Altec 421, 421-8, 421A (Original parts) $165.00 + S&H
this is pricing on the OC website.

Are the originals worth the money?

I also checked prices at Weber for reconing and they are $75 + S&H

I have had really great luck with Weber. I considered buying one of their bass speakers before I stumbled onto this cabinet.

There is one company who deal with all things Altec. They even have the correct cone kits for repairing these drivers. When they do a re-cone they also recharge the AlNiCo magnets back to their original specs. IIRC I found them doing a search on Ebay.

Found it in a bookmark: Great plains Audio Service. http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/

I often hear about Orange County, but have never had anything done by them.

About a year and a half ago, I had a 421A rebuilt by Great Plains Audio. I found them to be great to work with and did an excellent job. I normally use The Speaker Doctor in Charlotte, but he does not do the magnet recharge nor have good access to the smaller 2 1/2 " aluminum dust cap used on the Altecs. The Great Plains folks are former employees of Altec/Lansing and have original stuff for them and JBL. My bill was $136.70 including shipping to North Carolina. When I have my D140Fs done for my Bassman cab, that's where they'll be going. The Altecs are super speakers. Hope it works out for you.

I was wrong on the price. Weber has a standard $75 for 15s but for the Altec and a few other the price is $95. Still not bad. I will have to look into the details.

i've known Gary & Sharon Sunda (the owners) of OC speaker since 1975 and they've done all of my reconing ever since. they've been a JBL authorized service center since as long as i can remember and they've always done great work for me.
