Need advice (Ampeg)

Hey all, I'm currently in the market for a new bass cab. I just purchased a new amp recently, I got the GK 700rbii. I was looking at the GK neo 4x10 and the Avatar neo 4x10. I was on craigslist yesterday and found an Ampeg 8x10 classic bass cab for $450. This seems like a great deal and am curious if I should go for it or not. I play small venues as of now with my band and am not sure if I need all of that cab. The deal seems hard to pass up and I am going to check it out pretty soon. Any suggestions on what I should do here? Thanks

You were looking for a small ported Neo and you ask if you may be satisfied with a large closed Ferrit?

well...

You can always use just half of the Ampeg cab (410 at 8 ohms basically) when you don't need all of the cab. If the cab is the 810HPC - then you cannot do that. The HPC is a 4 ohm only cab. A bit overkill yes, but you are now prepared for the future! And if you like the Amepg sound, the 810e will be your best friend.

I don't know, i'm worried about lugging that huge thing around. I'm looking at the used Ashdown cab on the forums here, does anybody have anything to say about it. I've been looking at the GK neo and Avatar, how does this compare? Here is it's link http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ter?sku=605024

To me it would all depend on your style of music. Do you play aggressively? with a pick? The 810 will give you loads of volume with a strong midrange hump. Lots of fat tone. The neo has a tweeter and (I think) is ported. So it will give you more of a modern, mid-scooped tone with lots of clank and boom, if you like that.

Its either an 810E or a 410HLF. In your case the 810 is a great price......good luck

That's a decent deal, but just make sure you want to (and have a vehicle that can) move it. I hated carrying my 8x10 up a flight of stairs...sold it many years ago.

For others though, this isn't an issue and they having that wall o' bass behind them.

I have a 6x10 that is a bit easier to move, but my 1x15" combo does the job for 99% of my gigs (modern country and rock). The PA can be a good friend.
