need a answer, Hartke amp

So I am a proud owner of a brand new Hartke HA3500c. I don't have a cab for it yet so when it arrived today I unpacked it and played the two ways I was planning to use it until I get a cab.

Method #1- with headphones(the head doesn't have a headphone jack)

XLR out---->XLR in(usb interface)--->headphone out

Method #2-low volume practice

speaker out--->effects return(bassman 100 combo)

Both ways worked great, then I decided to read the manual, and it said it is never a good idea to turn a amp on without a cab hooked up. I know I have read many times on TB you can with a SS head.
The 3500 has a tube pre and a SS pre with a SS amp.

So my question is can I use either method with this head until I get A cab? I don't want to damage it in any way.

TY in advance,
Steve

You can run the Hartke without a speaker load, but I'd NEVER run a speaker output into the effects return of another amp. It will fry the front end of the other amp. You could, however, run the effects send of the Hartke to the preamp in or instrument in of another amp. So I guess Method 1 is OK, but Method 2 is a recipe for disaster.

I used to use my 3500 to record from. I would use the Direct Out though and run it straight into the board.

And Munji is correct. Connect the speaker outputs to speakers. If you want to send the signal from the head elsewhere, use the direct out. That is what is made for.

thanks for the replies, I will use method #1 until I get a cab, and thank you for the heads up on method #2. I'm going the see about trading my combo for a used cab tomorrow, I just need something to get me by until I can get the Hydrive410.

Thanks again for the replies,
Steve
