need feedback on Acme B2 cab

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking for a small cab that has deep lows and I came across a Acme B2 and it states that has seriously deep and clear sound.
Is there any one had owned this cabs, I need some good feedback if it is worth it to get this cab. I had read some bad commends that the owner is great on the sale but after the sale the guy turn to be a really bad custumer service.

I've got a pair of Low B2 series II (8 ohm) and I love'em individually and as a pair depending on the gig. I've not heard any complaints about customer service. Haven't needed any myself.

I love my Low-B2 for some gigs and it does produce a clear deep tone but make sure you give it enough power as it is not as efficient as most 210's. I run 500 watts @ 4 ohms to mine.

I've had no problems with Andy and he answered my emails quickly, I can't speak for others experiences with him.

I am looking for a small cab that gives me the seriuos tight deep lows and great hights and still gives you clear sound not muddy. I am tired of looking for a cab that when I play the B string the sound just dies or the speakers can't handle the freq. The cabs I had gotten that were good they were too big or I have to mix up 2 cabs in order to get deep low, tight punch, good mids and great clear highs.

What do you mean about giving th cab enough power and they are not as efficient as most 210's?

Tight punch is not the description that comes to mind with the Acmes, nor is 'great highs'. The Acme's are unique in the industry because they are tuned way down to the fundamental of the B string (30hz or so). That results in a very wide, deep tone. Since woofers capable of going that low are not capable of reproducing upper mids, the Acme's have a small mid driver to handle those frequencies, and then a very small tweeter to handle the very top of the upper treble response. This results in a very smooth, warm, organic top end.

Since low end takes a lot of power to reproduce, the Acme's are bit more power hungry than most. Using a hi pass filter to get rid of some of the super deep low end helps with both the punch and the power requirements, but then that kind of misses the point of these extending very low.

If you want HUGE low end, and a very warm, polite, organic top end, these cabs are great. If you want a more punchy, bright tone, there are better options out there (Bergantino AE210, TC RS210, etc.).

They're also not the loudest cabs on the market. More than a couple of folks have creased 10" drivers by pushing enclosures past their limits. Replacement speakers are ~$75.

Its my understanding that a 30 hz HPF is optimal given the ported design.

It would be hard to find someone better to deal with than Andy Lewis. Whoever told you different is full of it!!!

I own four 4Ω B2s. They are without doubt the best cabinets I have ever owned or played through. The caveat is that if you gig you should use a pair. I'd never risk my B2s singly. You will have to turn your amp up a bit more than other makes but this is far offset by the low response you get.

I am a long time Acme fan. I have a Low B2 and a Low B4. They shine with 5 string basses, but I'm mostly back to 4 stringers now and I'm just as happy. I'm playing mostly medium sized wedding dance halls these days and most often take the Low B4 even with PA support. I'm running either an Mpulse 600 or a Carvin B1500. Both mate well with the Acmes with the Mulse delivering 600W at 4ohm and the B1500 delivering I think 1100W. With the 6" woofer full out and the tweeter only minimially in play, I can get a full, round, yet punch-enough sound that cuts through the mix well even without PA support. It's probably not as mid punchy as my 12" walkabout Scout, but satifying just the same. Also known for not "coloring" too much the sound of your bass, if that's your thing. Personally, sometimes I just want the colored sound of the Walkabout for smaller gigs so YMMV.

As far as dealing with Andy Lewis, yes I've heard those things. personally, never experienced it though. He may not have always gotten back to me the day I emailed him, but he has always gotten back to me. Dealing with Andy has always been easy, even when I fried both woofers in my Low B2 from a loose guitar cord. Got replacement woofers quickly with install instructions. Simple.

You may want to wait for the new Neos Andy's been working on. There's a thread on it here somewhere in the amps forum.

Good luck.

I agree with Paul re gigging with two.I always take both my 4 ohm B2 cabs for security, regardless of room size. That way you can stack them vertically for sound closer to your head, and your bass head controls stacked on top for easy access. I got both mine used for 300 ea, and see them in TB classifieds and CList once in a while. One of my cabs had new replacement woofers, so it is possible to crease cones playin loud and hard with one cab only. If you want to take one cab maybe look at the Fearful/LDS threads for a 15/6.5 IMHO.
