Need help with Ampeg 610

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I'm sorry that I keep needing to post for help, but my bandmate's Ampeg 610 HLF has a problem with maintaining a consistent volume/cutting out. We've first noticed the problem during practice (I use the amp during practice), when we'd be in the middle of a song and suddenly the volume would go from "loud enough" to "I'm shaking the walls here" without touching any knobs. At first we thought it might have been the head, but we've been noticing the same thing with my Warwick Pro-fet II and got the exact same problem, except it would occaisionally cut-out. I have also tried the cabinet with my Acoustic B-3 head and found that the cabinet would go from an exceedingly loud volume to cutting out and then to extremely quiet, as well as occaisionally cutting out after that.

I'm thinking that this is a problem involving a connection, but after having taken the back panel off as well as all of the speakers and haven't been able to find even one bad connection. At the moment I'm thinking the problem is either in the crossover, the L-pad, or maybe just that the connectors are dirty and maybe corroded. Can TB help me figure this out?

Have you guys already tried a different speaker cable? (sure its not actually a guitar cord?)

Intermittent problems like that can be difficult to diagnose, you could try wiring around (bypassing) the crossover/L-pad and play the cab as a test.

Is this the same problem on the same bass guitar or different guitars? I don't think a cable would allow it to fluctuate that much, unless the Jack was breaking on the end

When I'm playing I'm using my fender Jazz and when my buddy plays he uses his warmoth gecko 5, and the cables used between the bass and amp are good cables. However, we are using one of the locking banana plug/"speakon" cables for both the Warwick and the Ampeg SVT heads, with the Acoustic I'm using an old 3 foot long 1/4" cable that worked perfectly fine connecting the acoustic head to his Ampeg 115 cab.

Did you try bypassing your cabs L-pad/horn yet?
