Need help in deciding SVT Head.

Sign in to disble this ad
Heys guys! Happy New Year to all of you.
Presently I am running a GK800RB with a 4x10 Genz Benz Uber 4ohm.
I am going to buy an Ampeg SVT head. I love to play reggae and want that fat sound.
I have option to buy a 1986 model and a 2006 model.
Does the year truly make a difference? Please let me know. I want to do this soon.

Cheers and thanks for your support.

Is the 2006 an SVT-II Pro, SVT-CL, or SVT-VR? All three are 300 watts of tubey goodness with minor revisions in the circuits. The model has a lot to do with the price points as well.

If the '86 is an MTI (made in japan), that would be my choice as well.

I believe so. If it's that old, it may need more maintenance prior to being gig ready, but is closer to the original two channel amps in sound than the more modern SVT-CL. But what model the 2006 is will make a difference. Is it a CL, VR, or II-pro?

How many years are you talking? My SVT-II is from the '80's.

I guess if you don't know, it doesn't matter.

The 80's is a real grey area in the ampeg lineage.

Gotcha. I just checked it's serial and it's a '91. You learn something every day...

Thanks for your comments. They are both SVT Classic Models. Both have the 6550 tubes.

Pretty much the only differences in the modern SVTs are in the preamps. They all appear to use the same power amp/driver board.

Were they making the classic in 86? I thought the classic was released on the 20th or 25th anniversary of the SVT which would put it at 89 or 94 for first production. If it's an 86 it would be either an MTI or SVT-HD. If that's the case, I'd go with the 86 over the 2006.

Does anyone know when the CLs were introduced? Jimmy?

According to this post, the MTIs were made from 1981-84. Has there been a period of time since 1969 when no SVTs were made?
