I recently bought an Ultrabass BX4500H Amp Head. I am looking to buy an Acoustic 2x10 Neo Cab. Here are my 2 questions:
1. Wattage: The Head is 450 watts. The cab is rated for 400 watts. I have had a couple people tell me that 50 watts is not really going to make a difference unless I crank it all the way up. Some people have even told me it's better for your amp to have a slightly higher wattage than your cab is rated for, and if you under power your cab it can do more damage than over powering it. Is this true? Will I be ok with a 450 watt head and a 400 watt cab?
2. Ohms: I'm not really clear on the whole Ohms thing either. The cab is rated 400 watts at 8 Ohms. The head has 2 outputs on the back: one says 1x4 Ohms and the other says 2x8 Ohms.
a) What does this mean?
b) will the ohms of the head and the cab be good together?
c) if they are good together, which one should I use (1x4 or 2x8)
I'm sorry for the long post and all the questions, I just feel lost and don't want to make the wrong decision. Thank you so much in advance for your help. |
1. You will never get 400w into a cab like that. You'll be lucky to get 200w worth of power into it before it starts farting out. If I were you, I'd look at used 410's before getting a 210. At least with a 410 you could be reasonably sure that your rig can handle the needs of your playing situation. And underpowering a cab is a big dumb myth. The only thing that blows cabs is overpowering them. If underpowering cabs could blow them, they wouldn't have volume knobs.
2. To keep this very simple, in the jack labeled 1x4, you can plug in one 4 ohm cab. In the jacks labeled 2x8, you can plug in one or two 8 ohm cabs, which makes a 4 ohm load. So if you have one 8 ohm cab, plug into one 2x8 jack...doesn't matter which.
