need help using cabs rated with different ohms

Sign in to disble this ad
I 'ave a mesa M9 which caters for 2, 4 and 8 ohms cabs.
now i 'ave an 8 ohm cab and a 4 ohm cab, were I to connect them in paralell [i assume that will lower the impeadence to 6ohms] will this work? without damaging the amp?
RATHER NOT FIND OUT THE HARD WAY

cheers

no problem of damaging the amp like that. Just don't go below 2 ohms

if it were an all tube amp, select the ohm load you will use and match it with the ohm load of your cabinets

You're actually lowering the impedance to 2.67 ohms, which should still be safe with this amp, given it runs at 2ohms.

BurningSkies is spot on about the impedance. Anytime you parallel speakers together, the combined impedance will be lower than the lowest load.

Also your 4 ohm will play louder than the 8 ohm cabinet unless the 8 ohm cab has a sensitivity rating 3dB higher than the 4 ohm cabinet.

I personally don't mix cab impedance unless I can put them on two different amp channels where I can control each output separately.
