Need Lightweight Power~Punch

Sign in to disble this ad
I injured my back. As I "mature gracefully" (hopefully)

I need something Lightweight Powerful and Punchy.
AMPS in the Lighter Weight category
Currently own:
MESA M6 Fathom and GK MB2-500
Sold:
Walter Woods 450/600w and Shuttle 6.0

SPEAKER CABINETS Currently own:
MESA PH 2x10 and 2 PH 1x12s
SWR Goliath 4X10 (1989 Eden)

COMBO I currently own:
HARTKE Kickback 10, this is an amazing little fellow, but with 120 watts and 1x10... I'm not able to use in the more aggressive settings, although I've used it with a Swing/Jazz band and it was plenty...

Considering:
Phil Jones Flight Case
TC Electronics 450 and 2x12
HARTKE Kickback 12
GK 2x10 combo
MESA Scout 12 combo

I'd love to hear other suggestions and opinions if you've used any of these....
Thanks
Rich

Aboslutely love my Streamliner/NEOX-212T combination. 56 pounds of wallop, and the cab really brings out the full range of the Streamliner's EQ IMO.

Why are you not considering any of the Markbass amps, combo or otherwise?

My bad - both are indeed Genz Benz The Streamliner is a 6-pound micro with a vintage, warmer voicing that comes in a 600 or 900 watt version, and the NEOX-212T is a 50-pound vertically-aligned 4-ohm 212 neodymium-magnet cab. I think the Streamliner megathread is on part 7 right now, and a search for the NEOX cab should pull up some good info. The limitation here is that the SL only goes down to 4-ohms, so you would not be able to use another cab with the NEOX... IME, however, the NEOX cab has absolutely zero issues with volume.

Looks like your budget is not particularly tight, correct?

I've liked the scout combos I've played. Phil jones stuff has never done it for me.

30'ish vs 40'ish lbs makes a big difference in lifting, but I've yet to find a cab in the 30 pound range that can match my Bergie Ht112ER.

You should at least consider Euphonic Audio. Wizzy 12 m-line seems like a good thing.

So the GK MB2-500 ain't doing it for you?

Maybe add an eq pedal for some 150hz. That amp is hard to beat for power/size.... add a tone pedal if you are not thrilled with the tone and you are good to go.

As far as cabs... if you are willing to shell out the cash I have a Barefaced Bass Compact that is a 115 cab. It weighs 27.4LBS, and is super easy to move. Carries like a suitcase. I paid $850 for mine shipped from England. Another option is to have Art of Noise Audio to build you a 12/6 fearful out of fibreglass. It will take a ton of power and sound great. They are building a 15/6 for me and should weigh 35-38LBS. He could likely do a 12/6 for far below 30LBS. Again not cheap though.

Epoxy Composite -

Barefaced Bass - Compact

Hope that helps!

That's one of the reasons I'm interested in the TC Electronics stuff. Two friends, Max Bennet & Mick Mahan are endorsees and would "hook me up".... Could be "the way"

The GK is awesome and so is the MESA!

I'm looking for more of a combo set up.... Phil Jones I played through last night and the headroom was low. Tonally, it was nice and filled the room really well.

I'm not familiar with the feaful stuff, but like multy small speakers... 15s dont get ffor me anymore... I like the punch of 12s and smaller... Thanks

Don't know if they have enough power for you but you might check out the Carvin Micro Bass combos.

That's cool, but the Compact does not sound like a 115 in the least. Very punchy, but still has the lows (albeit not huge, scooped sounding lows). Sort of like a "super 112" to borrow from Kjung.

Even though I have gone thru a ton of gear the Compact is going nowhere. Even though I prefer the 15/6 design better, the Compact will enable me to play well into my retirement years.

To all that have voted...

TC450 is leading the way then MESA Scout followed by GK...
What is it about the: TC450, MESA Scout or GK that you like?
I'm very interested in weight, power, tone variances, footswitches, etc.

That GK combo is great! It has a 4-band EQ (like any GK) with contour, it achieves 500W @ 4 ohms, so a really powerful amp, a speakon speaker output and a headphone jack which is great if you wanna play at home! It's really versatile, but it hasn't any footswitch. Sorry! The MESA Scout is great also: 300W, Vintage Tube Preamp with semi-parametric EQ from 30Hz to 12KHz and Active Bass, Mid and Treble, EFX loop and Player Control Network!

Weight? Is it 8 ohms as a combo and 4ohms when adding another cab?
