Need a new amp!

Sign in to disble this ad
Last weekend I was playing a gig when suddenly my Yorkville 400b amp decided to quit his job and start smoking.
When I opened the amp it was quite clear he'd never be the same again so it looks I really need to buy myself a new amp.

I'm a student and I'm really short on cash 'cause I don't have time for a job so I'm looking for something around $800 (€600).

I was thinking about the Orange Bass Terror 500 or the Gallien-Krueger 700rb .

If you got an opinion about any of these amps feel free to enlighten me with your wisdom!

Whatever amp I buy will be combined with a Sansamp RBI and/or Boss ODB-3 pedal so if you have any experience with one of these amps in combination with the RBI or ODB-3 feel free to share it!

PS I'm in a hardrock/heavy metal band. Kinda like Iron Maiden mixed with Velvet Revolver so I don't need a very clean sound.

Thanks in advance!

I've always been a fan of GK's, especially in a rock/metal type setting.

I've never played an Orange to comment on them.

I'm gonna comment that your last sentence about not needing a 'clean' tone means that you like the overdriven and breaking-up sound that you got by diming that poor Yorkie. Right?

I'd go bigger and more capable (headroom) and then dirty up the sound with effects pedals and save the poor driver from smashing it's cone on the grill.

In your musical style, I think more Watts and more drivers is always a good thing.

I use to own GK800RB amps and they’re rock solid amps, so I’d go with the GK700RB.

Not really, I didn't overdo my gain on the Yorkville. Most of the time I used my effects. But if I'm buying a new amp a more 'natural' overdrive/distortion would be very welcome.
