Could we have some more details? Such as music/playing style, etc. May be irrelevant if it's for practice however... Not sure.

But for that budet you could get a nice Ashdown, Peavey, Orange, Ampeg practice amp. Could stretch further if you're wlilling to go used.

Thanks, Anthony.

Check out the classifieds here. What's your location?
If there's a Craiglist in your area, there seem to be lots of cheap stuff on there.
I'd try to get an older Peavey MkIII/IV & well made Peavey or other respected brand 2x10 or 1x15" cab

I really like my little Ampeg BA112. It's just big enough for small gigs but still portable enough to carry one handed and has just enough bottom to sound like a real bass amp. They run about $279 new.

If you're really only going to PRACTICE with it (not rehearse, not do small gigs, etc.), get a Fender B-DEC. It's in your budget range, has built in tuner, drum tracks, exercise/scale drills, etc. It's..a practice amp. Sounds fine; lightweight, small.

Get a Carvin MB10. I have one and it kicks butt. Not only is it 200w by itself, you can add a second 8 ohm cab extension for a gig-worthy mini-stack. The tone of the MB10 is awesome and the DRIVE control gives you grit. Compression, XLR out, and headphones sound GREAT.

I loved the little Orange combo's. Beautiful tone, and amazing quality. I had a 25 watt Crush, but for 250 you can get a 50 watt. Has a built in tuner and tons of other fun schtuff. Orange Crush PiX 50 Watt Bass Amp - CR50BXT

+1 on the B-DEC. But if you're going to get one, buy it if you can find it. I don't think Fender still makes them.
