Need opinions : repair or buy another

Hello all,

I'm a beginner at bass sounds and amps and really need some expert help on this matter.

I found and foolishly bought a peavey 210 tx combo amp with a crate BE 15 cabinet. Now, although they sound great together (to me), the peavey needs one new speaker, a new tweeter (maybe) and possibly some circuit servicing.

I bought this rig mainly to play live at small-medium clubs where I can utilize the 200-300W power it would generate.

Now I did all the math and it would cost me $250 to fix the amp
and some more to buy another combo amp to yield maybe a lil more power. (300-350W to 4ohms-parallel conn.)

Anyone know what I should look for? or what would you do in such a situation?

First, go straight to your local Craigslist and see what's out there used.

Peavey 10" speakers are like $50. Cut the leads to the tweeter and put in a new speaker and you're only out a 50. Then you can start your savings for a (used) head w/ that leftover $200.

I agree, best to move on if it's that much.

If you just want to make it workable, you don't need to pay much or know much to replace a speaker.

With the Crate cab, what's the attraction to combo amps? I'm just thinking head and cabs sounds like a good approach for your situation.

thanks

The reason I want the combo + cab is purely for power needs.
Heres my math:
I have a 200W 8 ohm cab
if I get a 300-350W 8ohm combo, i get full power utilization (say 300W)

The guitarists use like 150W amps. So following the bass rule of thumb (of 3x guitar wattage) i still fall short. But i will request them to turn down the guitar.

That way I will have enough for a small club gig. I hope I am not way off in my understanding/calculations.

Any opinions?

So from your responses, apparently a new speaker and a tweeter would set me back 100$ or so. However I also need to fix some POTs/solder some connections because the amp is quite old (that i foolishly bought of craigslist to answer the first post). That would need to be taken to a repairman who will milk my wallet.

oh .. so much to consider... why cant it be easy? PLease help. I appreciate you guys posting about this. it should help a lot of newbies like mein the future.

I think your rule of thumb is a little anemic. Go for 5 to 10 times the guitar players power and the speakers to handle that amount of power.

+1 5-10x the power is always a good idea. And, a seperate head and cab is another good idea.
