Need a powerhouse 112, or 210 cab under 35lbs.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks, I'm looking for a compact 112, or a 210 that can cover most of my gig requirements as a stand-alone, and come in under 35lbs. I have an acoustic gig that just about anything will do the job, and virtually all my rock band gigs have PA support. Our stage volume can be fairly loud, so this will have to pack some punch. budget is under 400 bucks. Used is OK.
I currently run a 112, and a 210 together, and am really (too) loud for the rock gigs, so I'm hopeful one configuration, or the other will do it, and hopefully in a lighter package. I have a back injury, and my current cabs are becoming cumbersome..
I appreciate your opinions..

thanks!

The Avatar Neo cabs could be good. Very affordable, and you can get them as either 8 ohm or 4 ohm. I would go with a 112 instead of a 210, at 4 ohms so that you're getting the maximum wattage out of your amp.

Did you mean the Powerhouse line from Mesa-Boogie? I bought a Powerhouse (made by Eminence) 12" Neomag 4ohm Speaker and put it in a combo of mine, GREAT SPEAKER!

I'd recommended an Epifani UL-112. Great tone and punch, and the weight is a dream - downside is that they only come in 8ohms.

Thanks so far!! seems that the mjority is steering towards a 112. I am saying "powerhouse" as a descriptive. will the 112 throw more sound than a 210?

Unless you have a really low wattage amp, general consensus is to get an 8ohm cab if it's going to be a smaller cab (like a 1x12 or 2x10). Those cabs put out about the same sound but again, generally, 2x10's are a bit louder.

The new Orange SP210 and SP212 are pretty light, and put out lots of sound The GK NEO 212 is pretty light also, and puts out plenty of sound.

A used Mesa Scout 112 cab is about 33 pounds and has puts out an incredible amount of deep bass and quality tone. They pop up used here and there or a new one could me ordered. One of the easiest cabs to carry with one hand and the design is really well executed.

We might be confusing the GK "NEO" line, to the new "MB NEO" line which is what i was referring to. The MB210e, and / or the MB212e seem promising, but I don't think very many are out in circulation yet being so new...

The MBE-212 is not out yet AFAIK. The combos are very lightweight and handle lows very well for their size.

If you are looking for 1x12s, the Genz-Benz NeoX 112 is very well-reviewed. It's a little out of your price range new, but if you see a used one, grab it. I am using the Epifani PS112 and I love it. They is a little over your weight range at 37 lbs., but they are VERY easy to handle and they are $400 brand new. BIG lows from that cab, handles the low B from my Cirrus with ease and reasonably loud for a small box. Those are the two that I would personally recommend, but there are lots of other nice cabs too.

Thanks. I'll give a look. 37lbs isn't too bad as long as the "clumsy factor" is low..

My small to mid rig is a Bergantino AE112 with a Markbass LMII. Lots of power to size and extremely light. Great to be able to walk into a gig in just one trip too.

What are the main differences between the Epi PS112, vs the UL112?

While I have no experience with the UL112, what I've heard and read is that the UL112 is more modern-sounding and full-range where the PS112 is more traditional sounding with fatter low-mids and a bit more shy is the upper mids/lower highs than the UL112. The UL112 uses a neodymium driver while the PS112 uses a traditional ceramic driver. I can say that everything i've read about the PS112 has been absolutely consistent my own experiences, so i have no reason not to trust the extensive reviews here regarding the UL112.

If you prefer a "flat", more modern sounding cabinet, go for the UL112. If you prefer a low-mid bump, especially for fingerstyle playing or a more vintage slap tone, the PS112 is probably a better choice. Also, the weight difference between the two is only 5-7 lbs. While both boxes are slightly bigger than a lot of other 1x12s, the PS112 is very easy to move around and the UL112 would be a little easier still.
