Need a PRE for a Carvin AC40...Help!!

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I got a Carvin AC40 last week from another TalkBasser. It's light and a dream to play.

Problem: I play a few extremely small bars and clubs, where my Yamaha EMX512 and (2) speakers is all the really fits. My guitarist goes direct into the board with his Martin and the built-in Fishman is more than sufficient. I used to do the same with my Michael Kelly and Breedlove, as both are equipped with Fishman's as well.

The Carvin's output with the Volume and both Tone pots maxed is EXTREMELY LOW!!

That being said, I am looking for a recommendation for an inexpensive ($100 - $200) pre-amp that is designed to handle acoustic under-bridge pickups. I have read all the reviews, but was hoping for some feedback from actual users.

Thanks!!
~Casey

You could just run a clean booster like an MXR Micro Amp in line.

Didn't think of going that route.
Whenever I see the word GAIN, I think of my signal getting "colored."

Thanks!!

A simple pre like one of the ART TubeMP series is all you need. Cost about $40 if you look around.

If you wanna deal with the wall wart, those $35 dollar Art suckers aren't bad. They do color the tone a bit though. They're supposed to add tube warmth, which I would guess is a small mid emphasis or slight high roll off. I never really compared mine to running direct...

The AC40 has a pre-amp built into it does it not? Perhaps you should try a new battery.

It's an active L.R. Baggs ribbon transducer with (2) tone pots and a master volume. Brand new Duracell made no difference, but thanks for the thought.

I've used the Presonus TubePre before...worked well for clean boost. Pretty cheap, too, and 1/3 rack space. It doesn't need to be racked.

Buy.com has 'em for $99, but they can be found cheaper...and used.
