Need proper amp to compliment my SWR 4x10 goliath

Sign in to disble this ad
Any suggestions....i have an 800W 8 ohm cab and need an amp to push this bad chicken...as i have been using it underpowered for quite some time and never used it to its full potential....i plan on adding another 1x15 or 1x18 in the near future but for now....im lookin for an amp that will take care of this cab with at least 500W with the option of adding the additional cab soon.

any suggestions or input is much appreciated.

Gabe

Why is Ampeg not an option?

Many amps will have enough power. What kind of sound you looking for?

Dont get me wrong...ampegs are great and i know a lot of people love them....i had the STV 450 with the 410HFL cab (might be wrong on the names...was a while ago.) and that thing was a Tone Monster litterally. loved ALL the tones i got....however i i like to move a little air and i like more punch than what that had to offer.

ampeg just isnt right for me.

what im looking for is something that can simply push a little more than 375w to my 800w cab @ 8 ohms so that i can actually hear this thing for real, as well as have enough power for an additional cab later on down the road. So anything that closly resembles ampeg i wouldnt want most likely.

Gabe! Good to see you again. Have you looked at David Eden? You know I'm an SWR fan, but David Eden is a close second. Don't worry, the David Eden amp tone and the SWR amp tone are different.

Also, what about power amps with a pre-amp for tone?

I've always like GK heads, (GK 700, 800, MB-500) through SWR's Goliath cabs.
One of the better sounding rigs I've ever heard was a GK 800 through two 410 Goliath cabinets.
Recently I played my GK MB2-500 head into a Goliath Senior 610 cab.......WOW!
For the power your looking for maybe a GK 1001?

I know ill probally get loads of **** for saying this but i have never utilized a pre-amp for tone as the ampeg i used to own had plenty of tone....and when i switched to SWR i lost a little tone which i wasnt too worried about and added LOADS of punch that the ampeg couldnt produce.

SO....that being said. Paul any suggestions on a preamp that would compliment a GK head? I would probally pass on the eden simply cause i have never played one and in alaska i have never seen/heard one used. and i cant afford to purchase and have one shipped and end up not liking it.

i have however heard lots and tried many GK amps and LOVE the sounds i can get outta them. never played on the 1001 but that sounds like the most appropriate thus far. just never actually got sold on a GK....(bad salesman).

can you compair the Eden to another amp that is similar in sound/tone?

thanks again for all the useful imput.

I forgot to mention in my first post, GK's newest micro head that you might check out, the MB-800.
I believe it's 500 watts into 8 ohms.
800 watts into 4 ohms.
Same size as my MB2-500.
4 lbs.!
I can say my GK MB2-500 has "hit you in the face power."
I can only imagine 800 GK watts!!!

Never mind the growl! the 1 reason that everyone, weather they admit it or not, purchase GK for in the first place =) ill look into that especially if its 500W into 8 ohms

thank for the heads up on that! lookin it up online as we speak.

thanks govier but with only 1 cab for the time being, its 8ohms. on the 800 that will get me 500W. what is that 1001rb rated at 700w @ 4ohms? if so that would mean even less @ 8 ohms if understand correctly ohm/watt transfer. but pls correct me if im wrong.

Yes sir, it was just released at the Music Trade show a week or two ago.
I'm in a loud, 6 pcs., country/rock group and run my MB-500 into two 210 cabs stacked as a vertical 410. My MB2-500's 500 watts kills...
The MB-800's 800 watts are gonna be a monster!

I know this thread is kind of old, but did you find something you liked?

Speaking of Eden - you're right saying they're hard to come by up here, but if you go to the Mammoth superstore on the South side of town, they have some Eden equipment in the "expensive room." I'm not sure how great their Eden selection is, but I've seen the brand there. They also carry a pretty significant variety of bass amps/heads that you might want to check out, it's worth the drive, a lot of it you can't find anywhere else in town.
