Hi everyone, because I have been playing my basses, specifically, my Geddy Lee Sig Jazz Bass and my Squier VM through my old Fender Champ guitar amp, I have no knowledge on bass amps and I was looking for some help in choosing a bass amp on a budget. Specifically under $200. If it helps I mainly play progressive rock in the vein of Rush, Yes, and old Genesis. Thanks for the help!

You'll get a bunch of suggestions here but $200 means buy used unless all you need is a bedroom practice amp. Are you gigging? How big are the places you play? Any support from the PA?

$200 used might get you a lower power combo with a 15 in it. Enough for practice, small neighborhood bars as long as you're not playing very loud.

Yeah, you might want to tell us what you need to use the amp for. Bedroom practice? Jamming in a garage? Gigs in bars? etc. Also, as mentioned, $200 won't get you very far, maybe a used combo amp. Certainly not a gig worthy rock rig.

Gigging small clubs, parties (weddings, etc.), practice with full band, and some low volume bedroom. And you can go a bit over the budget, its just a minimum, but I can cross it but not by too much. 300 absolute max

Keep your eyes glued to the Daily Deals on the music store websites. They discount items quite far, but bass products aren't a frequent item that rotates through the order. I found a small Behringer head for under $100 a while back.

There were alot of Bass Amps in the classifieds when I was still looking. Definitely check there. GK and Hartke were two that I noticed many ads for.

Good Luck.

You can pick up a GK, hartke, behringer or peavey head used for around 100 bucks daily on craigslist. I actually came across a behringer ultra bass 450 watt head and the matching 410 cab for like 150 bucks together, it isnt the best quality (i didnt purchase it) but then you have yourself something to start with atleast. Used is the way to go, hope u come across someone who is selling something they arent versed on so you get a great deal.

My nudge goes to the SWR Workingmans 15. There's also a 12. The 15 will be the preference for the outdoor gigs. These things are pretty much bulletproof, out there for modest price, and they have this real cool slanting dashboard that's brilliantly executed.

They don't have trinkety blinkety code-named knobs. They just do the job and do it happily.

My part II of this recommendation is to buy a couple of amp handles and install them either on the sides or top of the box. Your spine will thank you from now on.

Look for a used GK 400RB.

At that price you may need to be looking for a combo.
