Need some advice on replacing speakers please.

Hello all,

First off, let me tell you what equipment I am currently using.

Cab- http://www.amazon.com/Ampeg-B-410HLF.../dp/B000OMFRSE

Head- http://www.ampeg.com/products/portaflex/pf-500/

I THINK I might have busted a speaker or two. Not entirely sure. I will have to take the grill off to check (help on how to do that will be awesome too). But I want to upgrade my cab anyways to be lounder and sound better. I was looking at eminence legend replacement speakers, they run about 80 bucks each. I can spend the money, but I think that they are 8 ohm. My head is 500w @ 4ohm and 350w @8 ohm. Can I do this with my current cab? Are there 4 ohm version of the speakers i'm looking at? Is this even a good idea to replace my current stock ampeg speakers? All advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

So i found these, they seem like a good replacement!

Please read through this thread: AMPS FAQ!! Info on OHMS, Allsize RIGS-OverUnderPowerCabs DIY TechTalk-Links

It's full of information.Just swapping out one set of drivers for another is not a good idea. All you end up with is a crapshoot. Driver(s) and their enclosure have to be designed to work together for best results.

The factory speakers are Eminence to start with.

Not sure if they are exactly the same as off the shelf speakers
or if Ampeg has slightly changed things to be a special design speaker.

They would just use the same basket and slightly modify the voice coil and cone.
Its really no big deal any good speaker recone service company would be able to pull the part number stamped on the speaker cone and be able to recone the speaker to factory specs.

Its a Ampeg cabinet so im sure its a well known number

Then you would have a matching set of speakers, as mentioned you dont want to mismatch speakers.
If you dont recone then i would buy a matching quad.

Its a ported cabinet which I believe is certain Eminence speaker which is different from the legend speaker used in the sealed cabinets.

Big difference between manufactures wattage ratings and what a speaker can do before distortion levels or damage.
So I dont think the cabinet will really handle more than 250watts before distortion. So even at the 8ohm rating your amp can damage the cabinet. If your riding the edge of this cabinet to get to band levels. then i would suggest adding another matching 4x10 to give you more overhead so you dont blow a speaker again.

its always good to open up the cabinet and check to see if its loose wiring or bad connectors.
