Need urgent help choosing between two AMPS!

Sign in to disble this ad
I live in a thirdworld country and have little choice, I can't order online and so on.
I can choose between the Crate BT25 and Behringer UltraBass 90 watt. They cost the same but the former is 25 watt only, but ive heard the latter has problems in the long run! please recommend!

I have no experience with Crate. My first amp was a combo that was made by Behringer, it died on me. You really need to have an application in mind when you buy, if you are getting a practice amp for your bedroom either will do, if you are planning on playing with a drummer, you are probably going to need 90 watts +, if they have the ability to mic the drummer, you should too or DI into the soundboard. All the best. Cheers.

25 watts non tube wont cut it. Ive had a berhinger a long time ago, i thought it was a descent amp, had good tone I thought. I had a 100 watt Crate before and coulnt wait to get rid of it, thought it sounded sterile.

Crate is the better combo; it is too bad that you can't get a larger version. I had a Crate BT100 that Jeff Berlin played through at a bass workshop many years ago. At that time, he was promoting Crate amps and cabinets.

I have never used Behringer equipment; but, I have never read any good comments about them.

I'm afraid to pick the Behringer 90 ultrabass cause I've heard that there been many faults in production... i Need an amp to play blues and soft rock in a very small bar of about 20-30 people maximum. the 90 watt would pull it off but im not sure for the 25watt crate.

The awful thing is I have no alternative than these two amps... Tumeni Notes, would you think that a Crate 25 plugged into one separate speaker would pull off a small bar environment with a drum that's not using a mic to enhance its sound?

I think you have to get the Behringer in this case, in spite of what people think about them. The Crate is just too small for your application.

I've read so many reviews saying that Behringer amps break down left and right for no reason whatsoever and I'll be quite obliterated if it happens to me.....

Coin toss.

We have some Behringers here(two KX1200's and a BX1200).
They've held up over the years. One KX does have a nearly inaudible hum IF the room is dead silent and you have your ears very close to the speakers.

Either choice is a gamble.
The Crate should hold up BUT I doubt it will be enough for a gig, even with a un-mic'd drumkit. IF you can find a SUPER EFFICIENT CABINET to connect it to, it could work. I like the tuner and layout but have never used one. Here's the manual: http://www.crateamps.com/pdf/manuals/BT50_OM.pdf

Behringer: more power but the reliability is a dice throw from the experience of others.

Either amp is subject to failure with the Behringer an unknown and the Crate having to be run very hard to keep up.

Another choice: buy both either now or one now, one later with gig money or ?
Then you can have a backup OR run both and have a better-sounding setup.

Combos - especially the cheap ones - are a bit of a gamble: either the amp has very little power & sounds like crap, or the speaker is nothing to write home about and won't stand a lot of punishment. You can keep your rig equally small and light if you go for a small 100W head and a decent cabinet for ex. Just make a list with everything you can get in your area, then document a bit about each item and when you narrow the list down to just 2 or 3 choices, ask here around for specific feedback. It's always better to have more power to spare rather than keeping the volume knob at max to squeeze all the juice you can.

Can you get two of the 25 Watt crate amps and use an ABY pedal to plug into both of them from your guitar?

I assume you mean Soviet Georgia rather than USA Georgia (although some parts of USA Georgia are pretty 3rd world-ish as well). Why are the Crate & Behringer your only options? Are they what a local store has? Are they both new? Despite Behringer's sketchy reputation for quality, I'd go with it. You can turn a 90 watt amp down if it's too loud, but if 25 watts isn't enough, you're screwed before you start.

Georgia hasn't been Soviet in a while, despite the efforts of the current Russian regime.

Would an online store like Thomann.de not deliver to Georgia? Or is the exchange rate too crippling?
