Hey everyone,
About two weeks ago I came home with an M6 Carbine and a Powerhouse 2x12 from guitar center. I am really liking the tone but im just not sure it is completely the choice for me. It just seems to be very "clacky" sounding. Ya see im an old school kind of guy and Im really not sure if its the mesa I want. I kind of jumped into all of this without really knowing what was out there. Im really kind of looking for a more tuby, vintage, sound with my rickenbacker. One of my favorite players is Cliff Burton who used (two) D-180s, but i heard that they aren't that powerfull. I just play alot small to medium bars and only a few large venues. Im also planning to do quite a bit of recording too. im just wondering if anyone knows anything about them. Ive also of course seen the 400+ but i just think that 12 tubes are a little too much $$ for me. I am also intrested in the Big Block 750 which i can get at a good price used and it has a pretty good overdrive channel ive heard. Any advice???

It would be the most simple solution.

I wouldn't give up on the M6/PH212 combo yet. Try some pedals, turn down your tweeter and turn up the gain. |

| | | | The Big Block is very warm and tubey sounding and if you can get one for a good deal, it will be very different then the Carbine. I owned them both at the same time and still own the carbine and a Walkabout. The Walkabout was very similar in tone to the Big Block but is half the size and weight and almost as loud. Of the three amps, I sold the Big Block only because it was so similar to the Walkabout. You can't go wrong with a Mesa but the Carbines are very modern sounding compared to the other Mesa models.

Whether it's loud enough depends on whether you like a lot of bottom in your sound, whether you like mids, and whether you need your sound to be clean.
Mine gets really really loud. However, I also take out some of the extreme low end, crank up the mids, and like a really snarly, pretty distorted sound. I have used mine for doom metal.
The 400+ is said to be a bit cleaner, and has higher wattage, so it should a bit louder before breaking up.

The M6 is designed to be clean, so if you want something with a little more "oomph" the BB750 is a nice choice. Or, just get a sweet pedal or two. |

Haven't played any other Mesa amp, so I can't comment on them. I'd like to try an M9 and a Titan V12 someday ;-)

The BB750 would be beyond overkill.
The M6 is great amp, but the clean high power and clarity is quick to show off anyones bad techniques or habbits. |

My WA shares time between the Scout 12 cab, PH210, and PH212.

Very intuitive control layouts and sweet sounding overdrive. The 400+ sounds warmer though and has a slower response. Insanely loud. You need a huge venue to really put these heads to shine. If you want old school thump, the 400+ it is. Channel 2 with a nice passive bass gets you there.
