Nemesis EN400 Head, or GK GK 700RB II combo?

Sign in to disble this ad
So here's the breakdown of my quest for a new amp so far:

An Eden Nemesis EN400 Head for roughly 250euro, or some 300$. Or a GK 700RB II combo....
Local music stores don't have these on stock to play around with so I won't be getting to audition it before buying.

If I'd get the Eden head I'd still have about 450euro to spend on a cab. I've heard it's better to spend more money on a cab than on a head, as I have no experience with head/cab configs I take this as a truth. But some also say that Eden heads, although labeled having 400Watts of power, start to clip at 12 o' clock, meaning 400Watts isn't really on offer. At the risk of being blunt: is this head really an entry level model?

The GK would cost me 699euro, offers less watts and less flexibility in tone (a GK supposedly always sounds very much like GK, whereas Eden is said to be more versatile, but I guess that's all just in the ear).

So I want an amp that can get dirty, has good bottom end and will get me through any style of music, from delayed loops to growling thunder.

What to get?

either one

I owned a 700RB for years and loved it for its tone and reliability. A friend of mine however, a more traditional style and schooled player, plays the Nemesis and he simply sounds great.

As for clipping, I think it’s more of a GAIN (pre-amp) issue, just ease up on the GAIN (or turn down the output) on your bass and turn up the MASTER for your volume. This provides you with more clean tone and should end the clipping.

The Nemesis has a warmer straight up tone than the GK, IMO. It’s a preference thing but both amps sound great.

Personally I would go with the Nemesis for that price (discontinued price) and pair it up with an Avatar TB153 or B212 NEO cab. I like combos for practice, rehearsal amps but I prefer separate components for gigging amps.

Which amp model do the local stores not carry? The Nemesis? The GK? Or are you referring to both?

Are you sure that Dave would be willing to ship to Belgium?

Not so sure... but he can still find a decent cab for the money has has left over, IMO, compared to the GK combo.

The guy selling it lives just over an hours drive away from my place and I mioght be getting for 200euro.... But is this thing going to bore after a month or so? It's supposed to be an entry level head, though reviews state differently, but then again the price is dirt cheap. I've been playing for years but never owned a head/cab, always combo's... So is this a cheap deal on a good head? Or should I hold out for better/more expensive?

BTW: no store anywhere near where I live has either of these amps in store. I mostly check secondhand sites.
