Hey folks
I just wanted to introduce my new cabs to the bass community ... so here they are.
I picked up a new DB112 a month ago at last year prices so that was a major bargain and just the other day I managed to win a bid on Ebay for the 2nd cab and I only paid $280 with shipping! It even included an official Aguilar cover! Yes sir ... I have been Blessed!
I now have two Boss Tweed Aguilar DB112's (one with a horn and 1 without) and they sound absolutley magnificent!
So my friends ..... here they are: |

The size and tuning of the DB's, along with the stiffer box (thicker wood.. unfortunately also heavier) results in the DB's having pretty much all the low end of the GS's but to my ear, a more even mid response, and less of an 'upper midrange hole' between the top of the driver and the start of the tweeter.
Very warm, punchy and articulate. One of my favorite 112's. They look fantastic also, if a little cumbersome to schlepp around. |

I am currently running two GS 112's, one with tweet and one without. I am using a B Max preamp into a Stewart power amp. I had a problem with lack O' mids at first, but once I figured out how to EQ the B Max properly (various threads in this forum helped, as did finally taking the time to read the manual ), I am getting great sound These cabs are a wonderful combination of sound and portability. Have fun! |

Recently I added bottom to the cabinet because Kjung said you can get the bottom of the GS. So I tried it and got alot of bottom from it probably like the GS but its not my thing having that much which is why I got the DB's to begin with. I like a strong low mids added to it. Although the GS is a fine cabinet and has good reviews from TB in general, the DB's have , well I won't say better but a more pronounced mid's. I have the black ones basically cause thats what they had. The tweed I would be too overly protected with as they look all to good to have mojo'd. Get cases. I got one of the aguilar cases for one but I tried http://www.lecover.com/ and got as good and maybe a better cover for much cheaper.

Up close and out in a house mix the DB does not have the same low end as the GS to my ears or people that have come to see me play... its not a bad thing.. but the low end extension on the GS seems to be much more than the DB and not equal.... Dont know why..
Where i would use my GS pair then next my DB pair. my bass player friend asked where was the Sub woofer on my rih when i used the GS cabs... and later when i would use the DB cabs said they did not shale the room as the older cabs did.. Cabs in same position and same amp top too. if as flat as possible EQ with no changes... it was a Erikson Montessi 500 preamp into a Carvin dcm1500.. so there are no tone controls.. just volume.. the EM500 is like an API so its no toy..
The DBs sound pretty good though as do the GS which may say are mid scooped.. They are mid shy for sure.. but if people turn up the tweeter all the way it accentuated the highs that makes one perceive it is even more mid scooped.. I would run my tweeters very low .. so the mid scoop did not sound so accentuated.
Just my 2 cents on this one..
Other wise that a nice rig.. it is amazing how much one can get from such a small rig these days.. its not your daddys 212 setup for sure

My ear hears that as not that they have deeper bass extension, but rather that there is a real drop in the voicing of those cabs in the low mids, resulting in them sounding 'deep and sizzly', versus all that nice mid voicing of the DB. They might actually go a touch lower also, although I don't hear it (but the heads I use are probably hi passed higher than your 'reference rig', so I might not even be putting that sub 40hz signal into the cabs to hear it).
+1 though, I love the DB's, and two of them have all the low end I could ever want, along with a nice warm punch, and a bit nice mid to tweeter transition that seems more natural than the GS, even though from what I understand, the crossover and tweeter are the same. Maybe the crossover point is a bit different. |

Yeah.. i wonder if it has to do with the harder birch wood cabs or the rear porting. I know in theory that the sound coming from the ports should be non directional... in theory...
but for some reason in my dense head it seams that the front porting always delivers more to the room.. kind of like a sound cannon... .. it may just be in my head... but it sure sounds that way..
I will have to say that DB certainly sounds more what i prefer butth eGS has some nice big booty... perceived or otherwise... So i do agree with you...
Yeah the carvin power amp may not be the best amp or highest dollar amp in the world but it really does sound good and fast.. and the EM500 preamp is pretty $$.. it is my studio piece that i know is about as true to true can be.. very wide and very flat not quite as colored as a neve. more like an ssl or api sort of. And when it is plugged into the carvin amp through any cab...you can hear things that you cant with just about any bass amp that is on the market.. its amazing how full some cabs will sound when running a rig like that.. but its just not practical weight wise or $$ wise for any gig... i like light and small these days...
I will say i played a Schroeder cab the other day on a gear rental gig.. it was pretty middy sounding but i really dig it.. that mixed with the girth of an AGGY would probably sound full and barky with nice lows .. Again i know in theory to not mix cabs.. but it might just work..
Ill tell ya the thing i like about the db or gs112s is that they fit in just about any car.. and they pack a wallop....

I was thinking of getting the rack for the AG500 too and checked with Aguilar to see if the DB751 rack would fit the AG500 with a power conditioner added and they said it would but I was hoping to see how it looked with the rest of the rig.
You answered my question! I don't have a sock monkey but I do have a beagle!
It would be neat to A/B the DB12 stack and the DB212. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
