New Amp Day - Ampeg V4BH

Sign in to disble this ad
Just hauled this to my office... An U.S. made V4BH.

I have some PA gear there, so I hooked the head into one of the cabs to check that it works... So far, so good. Even with low volume I think I am hearing what I wanted.

If you can't get a great sound out of a tube ampeg, it's probably still on standby.

Played one for years.
Plug that V4BH, into say, a Bergantino NV610, and enjoy.

Thanks everybody for the kudos on this. It has been hauled around this country in a very sturdy case that I got with it, thus the near-pristine condition.

I tried it at my garage plugged into my Aguilar DB212. 1978 Telecaster Bass, 1984 G & L L-1000. I found that I can get the tone I want with near-to-audible clipping and the "Frequency" on the middle or next-to-middle 11 o'clock setting, eq pretty much flat otherwise. The "high" switch did very little to brighten the Tele tone, the Treble knob affected that somewhat. I don't need a bright tone with a Tele bass anyway. On the G & L, with roundwound strings, I could get quite a spectrum of sounds. Still experimenting.

This amp is not very loud, which is my only concern. And, I did flip the "Standby" to get a sound out of it :-)

I've never played a V4BH, But I do have a V4-B and they are basically a 100 watt amp, you'll need to get an efficient cabinet to get some volume out of it

I miss my V4BH. Looked exactly like yours. Never sell it, you WILL regret it.

I think I will take your advice to heart. I have gone through quite a lot of gear and sometimes when I have sold something I started to miss it immediately so I needed a replacement...

+1. used to run my old v4b through an 810 and never wanted for volume. a 212 might be pushing it if you want to play really loud. it would easily cover all of my needs, but i've come to the conclusion that there isn't a bassist on earth who plays as quiet as i do so i might consider a second aggie 212 if you don't think it's enough wattage.

The Aguilar webpage is acting up on me so I can't get you the sensitivity spec of the cabinet. With my LM II at low master volume setting, it rattled every loose item in the garage, and there are quite a few of those. With the Ampeg, I don't get that effect unless I crank the gain to tube clipping levels or boost the bass. I will try a compressor to tame the attack a bit and see what happens.

At any rate, the sound is very "airy". I cannot describe it any better. It sounds like there is a whole lot of headroom but the volume ceiling is just about there already.

that would make sense, considering you have 4 to 5x the available wattage with an lmii.

To get more volume out of the V-4bh, some will turn the master all the way up and adjust overall sound levels using the gain knob. It will help you get more out of the amp until you get another DB212.

I agree with this. Mine is a V4B-AV, same amp with vintage cosmetics. The Barefaced Vintage 2x15 is a highly efficient (and lightweight) cab which matches this amp very well. Im never short on volume with this rig

Sweet rig. Looks like the cabinet is spec-made for the Ampeg.

I will be disappointed if I need another DB212, I assumed I would not need one with the Ampeg.
