| So I have had this setup sitting here for a few days now, and i have had a chance to run through some settings (at apartment volume, since i wont be back with my band until the summer) and i have really started getting the hang of it.
I am using a Fender RW Precision, with newer chromes (maybe about 7 hours of play on them).
The first thing I noticed was that this setup was that it gets a very smooth tone. The Traynor seems naturally trebly, which other have mentioned but it can be remedied in a couple ways and still gives a great sound.
The first way i found is just turn down the treble, this takes the highs out. Also, i think the mid set point might be a bit high freq. then i would like, so with treble down you can still get less highs, but still a good amount of high mids.
The second method, and one i really have been enjoying is the scoop setting. All it really is is a built in mid scoop knob, activated by a push button. This seems like it boosts the lows and treble in addition to cutting mids, rather then just cutting. Also it seems to round the tone nicely, giving a great jazz quality to the sound.
The ability to overdrive this head is still in question since i cant really turn it up at all, so it may or not sound great with the preamp overdriven. The YBA - 3 I was using previously was able to give a great drive with the master down and vol up, this head seems so much smoother, which could be the chromes, or the different tubes. Well seem when i change the strings.
The mystery I am facing here mostly is the Range and Resonance knobs. I do notice i get changes in the tone when these are adjusted, its not a universal change, but for example i noticed that when the range was around 3, and resonance 5, my G/#G/F/#F notes seemed really loose. Its so strange, I think perhaps it loosens or tighten certain frequencies?
If anyone knows how these knobs work i would love to know since I am baffled right now.
The Cabinet, is great. Its small, its not crystal clear and has a nice bit of mud to it. I would say its vintage sounding, and a great rock/blues cabinet. It really reminds me of Orange cabs. That kinda clarity.
The tweeter can be turned right down, and way up. It very harsh as some can be, i would say its more like the Avatar tweeters, its mild and adds just the right about of HF to the sound without being to edgy or bothersome.
The cab and head combo seems like a really nice rock system, think Kings of Leon. If i need a change i can stick my VT bass pedal in and it becomes an Ampeg!
Any question? (any hints on those Range / Resonance knobs?) |
