I'm looking to upgrade my rig. I play an Alvarez 5 string fretless in a tech-death band, and I'm in need of a head and cab capable of keepingup with my guitarists (Framus Cobra and Bugera 333XL) I like to keep the low end strong in my tone, with few mids, so I'd prefer an amp which works well with that tone. Any suggestion is welcome. Graci |

One big mother of a rig.
Buy whatever head you like the sound of and can afford. It's up to you. I think you'd be looking at over 500w @ 4 ohms, though. Solid state, that is. But the real issue is cabinetry. I'm thinking you might want a quality 4 ohm 8x10 cab or two 8 ohm 4x10 cabs.
On the other hand, if these guys don't play as loud as all that, maybe you could get by with a 4x12 or even a 4x10 or a 2x15. Only you know the answer to that. |

You'll need a lot of power and a 4 ohm speaker cabinet (or two 8 ohm) to get high sound levels. What $$$ are you thinking of spending? |

The odd thing is though, I'm playing through a 1x10 90W combo right now and I ring thru fine... because my guitarists are all mids! So I could probably go with the 4x10-12. Thanks guys, I appreciated this. |

You'll still probably want 500w (@ 4 ohms) to drive it. Possibly less if its a tube amp. (I might buy tube if I could afford it and if I didn't mind lugging it.)
If you don't get an all -tube head (and possibly even if you do), you might want to look into some kind of overdrive or outright distortion effect pedals. When the guitars drop out and you get to hit a few notes all by your lonesome, you don't want them to sound like rubber bands. You'll want at least a hot, electrified sizzle. Possibly even a fuzzed-out or distorted sound.
If all that makes sense, welcome to the wonderful world of effect pedals. There's a lot of overdrive/fuzz/distortion ones to choose from. Read up here on TB and spend some time searching for models on youtube. There's a lot of demos up there. |

Or the M9 Carbine for extra headroom, graphic eq, and compression. No worries with a rig like that, but the thing the above posters are trying to relay- if you want deep lows, you'll need LOTS of POWER, and enough spkr to project that power.
