New bass player looking for info

I have played guitar for several years now and decided to set down the 6 string and pick up a 4 and 5 string bass. What I current have now is a Peavey Pro Tour 700 head and closely matching 8X10 cab. This is working out phenomenally and I have yet to have a problem. My fear is that I only have a single head unit, so if that becomes non-reliable I will be done for a while. SO I have started purchasing bits and ends to a rack set up. What I am needing is some advice on a cheap compressor with my set-up.
Current gear I have on hand is a Boss GT-6b pedal, BBE sonic Maximizer 362, Sabine rack tuner and a Carvin dcm 1000 power amplifier. Also I am kind of wanting to get away from the boss gt6b pedal as well because I dislike stuff laying around on the floor while I play. First off will be a very simple question as I have always been the "simpler the better" type of person, what is the most appropriate way of hooking up? IE guitar-pedal-tuner-bbe-poweramp-cab? Also I am wanting to through a cheap compressor into the mix, what I have in mind is a Behringer autocom mdx1400 pro or the behringer pro composer. I have heard (other than the standard behringer stories) that the autocom works well if a limiter is needed, I believe my poweramp does have a limiter. The composer would be the best fit with more control and no limiter built in. With the rack setup I have now, would that compressor unit be placed after the boss gt6b pedal or right before the poweramp?
I am currently looking to spend no more than 40 bones for a cheap used rack mount compressor.
Also if I am trying to get away from the pedal, I believe I should start looking for a bass pre amp, but correct me if I am wrong.
Thank You in advanced and Hopefully it is no too confusing.

You could probably beat an elephant to death with your PV gear and it will keep on trucking...

So you're looking for a simple setup? With all that stuff?

Anyways, if you're just looking for a backup to the Peavey I think you've got all that. No need to add a compressor into the mix, especially if you don't use one right now. Just keep in mind, you get what you pay for. I'd rather not play through a comp at all than play through a $40 one, unless it was a KILLER deal on a used piece.

You'll probably get more hits in the Effects forum for recommendations on a comp. Just search around first. There are tons of threads on them.

And yes, you'll need a preamp if you get rid of your current pre (the Boss)...

You are right about the keeping it "simple." I guess I was looking at it that way when I first got my rig with just the head and cab. Thanks I will def jump over to the effects forums. Good to know that going without may be a better route than buying junk.
Thanks again.

If you pay a decent amount for your first bass it will last you a long time, up to a point where you are bored with the instrument.

My tour 700 rig I lucked out and pieced together through guitar center for $500 total, Tour 700 head and 8 X10. As far as the guitars themselves go, could definitely use an upgrade but they are getting the job done. My fear is with all of the road time my head is seeing as well as the cab, I better play is safe while I still have a couple dollars to throw around instead of spending it on comics and beer. By no means am I bored with what I have now.
