So I am always reading about great finds at thrift shops and Goodwill. I think I had one of my own here today. I check Craigslist for deals and sift through the usual Squier, Rogue and Peavey basses (not that there is anything wrong with those basses I have some of my own). Today our local Goodwill posts that they have an Ampeg SVT and 2 cabs that are about 4 feet high along with a Peavey booster and EQ. My heart begins to race and I say to myself, "No way."
So I take an early lunch and blaze across town and get inside the store and in the back I see the stack. I walk through some man blocking the aisle trying to get there and then I see the other 810 and I say, "No way."
I look on the back of the SVT amp and it says Magnavox, Made in USA. It's a Black line, with black rockers, polarity switch, standby switch on back, 2 prong cord. I wonder if it works? Then another guy see's it and goes, Wow! He calls his buddy and says to him, "you won't believe what I just found, they don't know what they have." I think to my self they sure don't and I crab the ticket and go pay. The guy on the phone goes to the manager and chuckles, "You don't know what you got, do you?"
I get it home and unloaded, you guys are right - things are very heavy. Get both cabs unloaded. Covers for all 3 pieces included the amp cover is in excellent shape and the others are fair.
I plug in the amp and fire it up just to see if it powers up, and it did - red light. I probably made some operational errors in connecting this and testing but there was no manual. Feel free to provide advice on the subject.
I'll get to the point. Both channels on the amp work and both cabs work. Lots of static and noise though so I am sure it needs some thorough maintenance before using it.
When I got home from work I pulled one of the speakers out of one cab and the date written on the speaker is 12/31/73. All speakers look original and in great shape. This cab has the tilt back wheels and handle. The other one might be original that was bought with the head and older, no handle but it is on a dolly with 4 casters. I will post more pics and my findings later. Gotta go to band practice. Thanks for reading.
And since this story isn't true without pics, here ya go:
