I read the CN 212 is a cab that its sound could be in the middle. Can you repost that video on youtube. I had owned the AE212 but i never got the opportunity to play a AE410.

Didn't have it saved prior to shutting down my Youtube channel.
Edit: I will actually post a clip or two when my CN212 arrives in a month or so (including the AE212 and a few different heads/basses). Since I'll have one of the first boxes from the first batch (since I put in a preorder as quick as I could), you probably won't waste much time waiting until mine (and a few other early adoptors') cabs arrive and you get a bit more information from more than just me flapping my gums (or I guess, tapping my fingers!).

And, I would suggest you reread my comment on the NV610 and I think it will clear up your question. It is the 'textural presence' of the CN212 (as you describe it) that is the big difference between the AE212 and the CN212. It isn't a volume thing, but a tonal thing, and the CN212 would give you a bit of that 'feeling' you get from your NV610 IN THE CASE WHERE YOU DON"T NEED THE VOLUME of the 610 for smaller gigs and more difficult load-ins. MUCH closer than the AE212. However, of course, not so close as being any sort of 'replacement'.
Even with your first point, you seem to be somehow reading in my comments that the CN212 is somehow 'louder' than the AE212. It is not. It just has more of the HD line of cabs low end fatness, and a bit more of the AE410/AE112 brightness up top versus my AE212. That is a magic combination for me personally (and of course the weight spec is amazing for those of us who are 'one nighter freelancers'), but of course, that won't be a positive for everyone. | Thanks Ken.
No, I was more thinking about tone. I guess I would really need to A/B as you have done. Knowing the high regard you have had for the AE212, no doubt your comments are on target.
Confession: I'm not real thrilled with the thought of selling the AE212 at this point; so, would need a very compelling reason to do so.

Ken- any idea or opinion on how that new 212 Bergie would react with a vintage SVT? Too boomy? To much mid saturation? Any guidance is appriciated.

While I appreciate all the detailed comparisons to the other Berg cabs, what about comparing this to other cabs that are roughly the same size and weight? For some of us, that's the essential parameter.
I've been using my Epifani UL310 series 1 for 6 years and basically haven't been interested in anything else because I just tuned out when I saw anything weighed more than it's 47 lbs. While it's not perfect, the sound has been very good and better than anything else I've owned.
This is the first cab that might compare in terms of size. I'm guessing you're going to say the CN212 has less of the mid scoop than my Epi and less of the obvious highs of the tweeter that sit on top of the sound of the drivers.

Love that TC115 for difficult load ins, and my more jazz oriented hits, especially with the PBass and the TH500. Unique tone... like playing out of a studio monitor. Amazing cab. Even the AE212 was much punchier and bright than the extremely flat, extremely clean tone of the TC115... very different thing. A bit of a specialty cab for me that I continue to dig, and at 34 pounds, and loud enough to do literally any gig I would ever do, it is a unique and valued piece of gear in my cab collection!
The TC115 will be used as it always was... the AE212 is probably at risk, due to the voicing difference, but I'll decide about that one in a year or so. Really do love the AE212, but that 'merging of the AE410 and AE212' voicing is a dream for me!

I'm guessing you're going to say the CN212 has less of the mid scoop than my Epi and less of the obvious highs of the tweeter that sit on top of the sound of the drivers. | I gigged the 310UL as my primary cab for a number of years, starting with the original 'shallow' T-310, then moving to the 'deep T-310' and finally the 310UL(I). Didn't like the Series II at all... way too polite in the mids for me.
The CN212 will be significantly louder on the gig, and will have a MUCH more low mid punchy, fat low end. The upper mids will also be MUCH more integrated with the tweeter (i.e., a nice present upper midrange that makes the tweeter sound like a nice extension of the top end of the driver) versus the 310UL, where there is a drop in the upper mids and that airy tweeter sitting kind of above the tone of the cab.
Very different. The AE212 is like a 'similar but better' 310UL to me, the CN212 has very little in common with the UL voicing.
You can get just a bit of an idea of what I'm talking about if you search Ken Jung on Youtube and listen to the F500/Max 9.2 clip with the AE410. While the CN212 is a bit wider and more even (and smaller and lighter... god bless Jim Bergantino ) if you have good quality phones, you can get a bit of an idea of that 'rounder low end and more present midrange' that you can expect with the CN212 IMO and IME.
Again, you will get more reviews and info when these start to ship within 4 weeks or so.

I'm sure Tom Bowlus will get his hands on one of these eventually and he would be a good source on that. I guess I would say if any are using the AE410 with an SVT successfully, they should also dig the CN212.
I understand that Jim has a sealed 15/8 cab coming out in the NV line.... 53 pounds I believe. That might be THE thing for a small SVT friendly cab. Again, not my thing and know very little about it at this point.

Gonna power one of these with a Puma primarily using a Rob Allen and a P-Bass. Tough choice. | I'm also a big fan of that cab. Roger's cabs are top notch. I did a pretty serious trial (still have clips up of the ML112 on my Youtube channel) and liked them quite a bit.
At 66 pounds and with a relatively deep front to back depth, that pushed me to wait for the CN212. While the cabs don't sound the same (the CN212 is a bit fatter down low and more organic/warm in the upper mids, and of course, extends a bit higher in the treble, the ML is a bit more mid present in general, and 'brighter/cleaner' up top) I would doubt there would be many that 'loved one and hated the other'. They are both slammin', mid present, powerful, and well made.
I would think the major 'tie breakers' between these cabs would be:
1) Size and weight... that 20 pound difference and box size difference will be meaningful for some players.
2) Tone approach... for those who use 'distortion' in their tone, that Faital mid driver that Roger uses is fantastic to get that upper mid distortion/grind out to the audience and across the stage, and to still sound 'paper cone' warm.
3) Treble extension... Jim's crossover is a thing of beauty, and for those who want a bit more upper treble snap, the top end of the CN212, combined with the nice present upper mid response just sounds great with any bass using roundwounds IMO. Very warm and 'non metalic' tweeter execution with the CN's.
Hard decision for you, I agree. Hard to really make a mistake with either of these, and my guess is, they will be strong competitors at the top of the 'single cab, loud enough for almost any gig' category. |
