New Cab Day, My Orange TB500, And A Question

Sign in to disble this ad

Got the Orange last week, and the 2x15 from a guy on Kijiji yesterday. It's a Garnet cabinet with 2 Yorkville 200w 8 ohm speakers in it.

My question is if both the speakers are 8 ohm, is it an 8 ohm cabinet or a 4 ohm?

I've been running it at the 4 ohm setting on the head which I understand is safe either way. I just tried the 8 ohm setting and I find it sounds better I just don't want to destroy the amp

Never heard of Garnett cabs but it looks like it would rock! It's a 4 ohm cab. How does it sound better on the 8 ohm setting? Is it louder?

As far as I know, running your Terror at 8ohms with a 4ohm cab can't hurt anything. I've run mine both ways with various cabs and it just makes a tonal difference. As long as you're not hooking it up to cabs that are less than 4ohms everything should be fine.

Thanks guys!

To answer your question Jeff, it sounds less bass-ey, more articulate, and I can crank the gain more before the speakers clip. Garnet is a Canadian company from Winnipeg that was around in the 60s, 70s, and maybe later.

Thanks countrybass!

At the 8 ohm setting the amp is expecting the higher load and so is pushing out more power to compensate. With a 4 ohm cab it is working harder than it was designed to do for that load. At higher power levels there is a risk you might damage it.
