new cab: LDS 15/6/1

I bought a new cab over the weekend and I've gigged with it once so far. It's an LDS 15/6/1 with the 3015LF and the 18sound mid (bought it from TBer deb).

After one gig I have to say that I'm pleased with the sound and functionality of this cab. I've been looking for a 410 sized cab and went with this because, well, it came up for sale locally and I thought I'd see what all the hoopla is about.

First impressions: The horn is useless to me. I'm a tube amp guy. I sometimes run a range of distortion and fuzz depending on the tune and as expected, it sounds terrible with the horn turned on. So I just shut it off. But it's nice to have it there if I pull out the Stingray and want a spanky sizzly slap tone.

I used my p-bass into my V4BH into the LDS cab on the gig and I thought the sound was great. I was able to get something that I liked and that sounded comfortably familiar (for a guy who is accustomed to dragging an 810 around). With the V4BH it was plug and play. My settings were quite similar to what I used with my 810 on the previous gig.

Obviously, tons of people have posted at length about various incarnations of the fEarful/nEarful design, so I'm not going to wade into all that, other than to say that I'm glad that, after the first time out it was obvious to me that this cab is really flexible. Time will tell if the novelty will wear off and, like so much other gear I've tried over the years, I'll just revert back to my dinosaur ways... p-bass into an SVT into an 810. I suppose I'm a luddite in some ways.

Another note: I didn't really find a sound I liked as much with the 1001RBII when I was messing around at home. There's something going on in the low mids that I didn't like and couldn't fix up in about 45 minutes of messing around. I'll take another run at that some day.

Here's a picture of my practice room right now...

I was looking at that when it was for sale. Congrats!

I've been using the Avatar TB 153 for a while now and I'll admit I haven't spent as much time as I should getting it dialed in. I've found it to be a very honest cab and I would guess the same for your LDS. It gives what you put into it.

That being said, I think I'm getting the hang of EQ'ing it. I think the key is to go in very small increments. The cab seems to be very sensitive and a little goes a long way.

I was ready to pull the trigger on the Avatar TB153 as soon as our postal strike was resolved. This came up in the meantime and saved me some cash and the hassle of shipping. I'll bet they sound very similar.

Congratulations! The 12/6 and 15/6 nEarful/fEarful cabs are great and Don does really good work. You bought it from a great TBer as well so you're "3 for 3"

Be careful with keeping the L-Pad for the tweeter turned all the way off. I believe that's a quick way to burn out the L-Pad. I'm certainly no expert on the topic, but I think the solution is keeping it "just on" for safety.

Thanks for the tip! I didn't know that. What if I install a switch to remove the signal from the horn?

I'd just leave it almost off instead if that works
