Question New Cab For SWR SM-900

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello guys,

I have a SWR SM-900 and I will buy a new cab for it. I'm thinking to buy a Bergantino AE410 and run my SM-900 in bridge mode and want to take your opinions.

Also I want to take your cab suggestions

Is it better to use a 2x10 + 1x15 (boths 8 ohms) in stereo mode or a 4x10 (4 ohm) in bridge mode? (SM-900 gives 240 watts per side at 8 ohms and 900 watts at 4 ohms in mono bridge mode)

PS: Please use simple english because my english is bad

I've always like SWR heads into single cabs bridged. More full bodied sound.

I would also consider the new GoLite 410 in 8ohm configuration. That cab is very lightweight, and most report it sounds virtually identical to the Goliath III, which is a GREAT match for the SM900. Since the SM900 tends to run quite hot, and since the 600 watts bridged into 8ohm is plenty to drive virtually any 410 to full volume, that is a great combination. I gigged an SM900 bridged into an 8ohm GIII back in the day, and it was a thing of beauty!

I love my AE410, but have never heard it with the SM900. Bridging the SM900 into 4ohms isn't something I would personally do with that amp (i.e., running each side at 2ohms).

Good point I missed that. Bridge into 8ohms only.

It is technically safe to bridge at 4, but man, talk about frying eggs on the top of it!

Now I use 2x10 and 1x15 (both 8 ohms) at stereo mode with my SM-900 and it runs hot. It was in a rack and like Ken said, I was talking about frying eggs on it! Now I don't use it in a rack and it runs warm

Do you think bridging it to 4 ohms would damage it or it will only get hot?? If bridging to 4 ohms is not harmful, I prefer to bridge it to 4 ohms to get 900 watts. But if that heat can harm my amp (melting cables in it etc) I will go with 8 ohms...

It is designed to run 4ohms bridged, so it should be OK. Actually, you can just daisy chain your cabs and run the head bridged right now. Running the output of your head to one cab, and then using the first cab's second 'input/output' jack to daisy chain to the second cab is the identical thing as having a 4ohm cab.

It will get hot though... and it always made me a bit nervous, but the manual says it is OK.

Thanks for your replies

I know I can daisy chain my cabs but I will buy a new 4x10 because I love the sound of 4x10s. I didn't try to daisy chain my cabs but I can try and look at the temperature of the amp when it is brdiged in to 4 ohms logical?

I own a GoLight 8 ohm 410 and an SM 400 and love'em! I have messed around with many amps and cabs and have now stopped looking for anything else.

A friend of mine owns an SM 900 and he took his amp to a repair guy and had two larger computer fans installed inside. He no longer has any over-heating issues. When they kick in, they make a little noise, but nothing heard during play. They don't stay on very long anyway.

He has two Golight 8 ohm 410's and daisy chains them bridged. This is what prompted me to go out and get a GoLight 410 cab. My second cab is a Goliath III Jr 210. But I will be getting a GoLight 15 when money allows.

Try 15's?

I ran 2 Eden 15's in bridge mode. Awesome tone with my SR5. Yes, it got hot- as designed. I miss that rig.
