New Cabinet Purchase Advice

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys!

I'm looking at replacing my current Ashdown 4x10 with something a bit lighter and smaller. I've pretty much decided (after playing through one) on this:

Ampeg: Portaflex Series - PF-115HE

Sounds great and it's within my price range! What I hope to get out of this cab is good home/studio/rehearsal usage as well as live small club work with PA Assistance.

I Play a 5 String bass on various genres (ranging from Hardcore metal to Blues to anything!) and the 15" speaker sounds great with it and the 1" driver helps the highs/tone accent.

So, 2 Questions. 1. Does it sound like a wise purchase? and 2. Has anyone got an experience with this Cabs?

Thanks tonnes in advance!
- Acook

It wont be as loud as your 410 but should do the trick in smaller clubs. I would suggest replacing the weather stripping with a little wider weather stripping. Mine buzzed at louder volumes until i changed the weather stripping. It sounds great now and i love the tone of this cab.

Right now I don't turn my 4x10 up past Vol level 3 most of the times so pushing the speaker/amp a little harder isn't really an issue for me. I kinda gathered from playing with the cab in store that it wasn't going to reach the same output levels but like I said most places have PA Support (and near demand that you use it!). Really i"m using it for my own little monitor.

Also, Looking at the Ampeg website again, the 2x10 version of the Portaflex cab actually has a lower frequency then the 1x15! I maybe be looking into that model now for even better low end clarity. Would that be right?

You should check out the Avatar B153. Simply an amazing cabinet.
I use one for small to medium gigs and then put an Avatar B210 on top of it for bigger gigs.
The B153 alone sounds great and it is not too heavy.

I Have looked into Avatar Cabs but from what I can discover they are only shipped by a guy from Tasmania (I'm From Queensland, Australia) so shipping would probably be a fair bit for a Cab! Will keep looking though, thanks for the advice!

I've been able to A/B the PF115 and the PF210 cabinets.
"To my ears", the 115 was the MUCH better sounding cabinet.
Smoother, fuller, rounder, plenty of bottom, fast transient for a 15", with noticeably better consistency of note volume up and down the neck on my old jazz bass.

I now own a PF115...

I though the 1x15 would be a better sounding cab by itself... I think I'm going to have to track down a 2x10 to trial before I make the purchase now! Thanks Shoot-r
