New Head Day!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

So I was perusing through my local music store, looking mostly for strings and a 3-way switch, when I came upon this old Acoustic head - labeled as a "collaboration series B-3". The thing had no price tag on it, so I pick it up and bring it to the cashier and ask "how much is this head? I don't see any price tag". She asks for the guitar specialist about the piece, and he said "we got that one for free, because it was broken, and we couldn't fix it, so if he wants it he can walk away with it if he thinks he could fix it." So I buy my strings, and my switch, and then lugged my amp onto the bus and bussed it home. I thought I would take it to a qualified tech, or see if myself and my father (who is actually qualified to do this sort of thing) could fix it. So I get home from school, plug this thing into my 410, plug my bass in, and start doing some licks, and what do I hear?

Some rather pleasing bass tones The only problem with it is that it's a little overpowered for my bass cabinet, and that some of the knobs are a little scratchy.

I want to open it up and clean out the pots is that safe? I've got some readings to do for now, but I'll get to posting some photos tomorrow

It's totally safe, just don't touch anything on the board because some components will shock you. Just spray some contact cleaner in the pots and use some compressed air to blow out some dust AWESOME score dude.

I guess you fixed it by taking it home.

The amp chooses it's master.

What's the problem? Just keep the volume in check...you'll be fine.

Well, I was holding back on photos from the lack of replies, but I guess I can supply these photos from the acoustic wiki:

It really only looks slightly different.

okay fine, here are some blurry, low-quality photos that I took in the bad lighting of my basement.

The front,

the back, note that there are only 1/4" outputs, other than for the DI/balanced preamp out, which is XLR.

The back of my cabinet, note the lack of 1/4" inputs. Also, it has XLR, what the heck? Okay, so I probably won't blow my cabinet with this head, but at the moment I can't connect to it, I'll just have to get an adapter.

Also, I forgot to mention, I recently found this on kijiji:

this guy is selling an old acoustic 301 cabinet for $200. That's kindof exciting.
