New, Lighter Cab Suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
Currently my rig looks like this:

Preamp - Sansamp RBI
Power Amp - Samson SX2800 (2800W, something like 850W per channel @ 8ohms)
Crossover - DBX, set to 140hz
Cabinets - Carvin 4x10 (8 ohm), Carvin 1x18 (4 ohm)

The stack is great and does exactly what I need it to do. I run all of my sub-140 hz frequencies through the 18 and everything else goes through the 4x10. However, at 59 lbs (1x18) and 68 lbs (4x10), it is really just starting to get to be too much, too heavy, and not worth it.

I'm looking for lighter cabs that can still give me the full range I need (I play a custom 8-string with a low F#) and the punch of the 4x10. I'm also looking for something that wont break the bank (preferably an even trade or my current cabs, +/- $300). I'm willing to go with a subwoofer on the bottom if it means it will pump out 23hz as well as little nicer than my 1x18.

Suggestions?

Your 118 does not put out 23hz (unless you mean at -20db).

Since you are already set up for a crossover, I'd suggest building a fEarful 15/6 with biamp inputs.

A 15/6 or 15/12/6 would be punchy and be able to put out low frequencies. And also, I believe that most Carvin 1x18's aren't tuned very low. The one in my Pro Bass 500 stack seems kind of midrangey.

I just checked, and the new 118's are rated at 30 hz.

Another point is that the Pro Bass 500 only puts out about half power that the speakers can take, and I boost the midrange.

One good thing you are doing is giving LOTS AND LOTS OF POWER to drive the really low frequencies.

That's two suggestions for the fEarful cabs. Are they really worth it? Have either of you guys had real experience with them?
