new member, new gig, new rig

Hi, I'm new here, seems like a great forum. I'm going to be leaving a loud classic rock trio for a wedding band. 100 - 200 people modest size rooms. the band leader likes low stage volume and for the PA to do the work. It seems like a good excuse to get a new rig, something easily transportable. What I have in mind is a Bergantino AE210 (I like 10's and this is shallow enough to fit in my car trunk. powered by either an eden navigator/pa head, or a genz benz shuttlemax 6.0. So - some questions:
1 is the navigator compressor decent, or would I want outboard anyway?
2 is it correct to assume navigators cannot have overheating issues as they are pre only?
3 what else might I consider as good alternatives to these pieces? I usually like to buy high quality and keep it for many years, as opposed to prosumer stuff. thanks in advance, greg

I can't comment on Bergantino gear, but you seem to be on the right track.

Cabinet

Just my 2 cents here but ....

I'm doing almost the opposite of what you are doing ... wedding band to bar band (still doing the weddings .. the leader just backed off far too much for my taste so I'm doing the bars too)

Anyway ... I have been a 10's guy since the 80's and even though they are articulate ... I always missed something.

I eventually went with the Eden 2-12 cabinet and what I found missing was the "bigness" of the sound ... even at low volumes. I had plenty of articulation and highs but the bottom was far more expressive and fit the mix better.

I've since moved to 2 Aguilar DB112's (1 with a horn and 1 without) and have also moved into an Aguilar AG500.

I am now hearing more notes and feel in what I am playing than ever before and I guess that's because the amp/cab combination just cuts through and picks up everything I am putting out! I have recieved way more comments (all good) about the sound, feel, punch , etc) than with any of the 10's combinations I've ever used .. and that has been many!

Anyway ... this is not to really point you into the Aguilar vein (although that would be a good idea for you to check out for yourself) but don't discount the small 12 loaded cabinets ... especially for weddings and corporate parties. 10's are nice ... 12's are PHAT!!! My 2 cents .... Whatever you go with ... have fun and I send my best wishes too!

Hello Jim and thanks for the response. The idea of 12's for bass is still a little foriegn to me. I definately need to get out and hear some. I am interested in the mesa walkabout and the Berg stuff. Hopefully where I travel to check out berg, they will have some anguilar as well. I'm thinking life would be good with a walkabout 112, and an extension 112.

That sounds like a very good rig for wedding band, IMHO. It seems to me that you are on the right track.

svt/810.

hey, you want them to remember you, don't you?

but seriously, speaker size means about nothing these days. don't phear the 12"s just because they're 12"s. some of the 12" cabs are absolutely great.

Yep, driver size does not matter. For example compare an epifani UL210 to a schroeder 212 and the UL210 has WAY more low-end Like WAY more.

It really depends how the cab was designed.

I went from bars to the clubs/private parties/wedding gigs, and just moved from a heavy 4x10 and a 2x10 to a 2x12, so another vote there. I went with a genz benz neox 2x12. Took me a few gigs to adjust, and now I love it. Not too big, not too small. and light.
