New Peavey Combos with Class D Amplifiers

I just noticed on Sweetwater the new line of Peavey Max combos. They all are class D amplifiers. I like the Max115, it has 300 watts, 115, and by it's specs fairly portable. However, I don't know if it has a line out for a second cab. Peavey is always sketchy on their product specs when they advertise.

Also, I can't tell if it's ported.

Sweetwater might want to update their product description. Sounds like they copy pasted the wrong info...

"...you're free to play all night long through the heavy-duty 10" woofer..."

Still, looks like a great price point for a medium sized amp. Maybe these will give Carvin a good run for their money?

I'll stick with my PF500 or my GB Shuttle 9.0.

Every recent Peavey I've had (including a Max) just didn't cut it for me.

It has a DI
It's ported

Should be a solid amp
Surprised by the weight though.

I've not played an SS amp I liked as much as the old Peaveys heads. My Century Bass 200 with a little distortion and a P bass is pure heaven. I want one of those 400's with fuzz and distortion too.

It doesn't have an external speaker output. Yes, it's ported.

Could you please tell us a bit about the new psychoacoustic feature of the amp?

Appears to be a kick-arse amp for the price.

It's an analog harmonics generator that adds extra higher harmonics when you play a low note. The sum of the harmonics tricks your ear into thinking there's more deep low end.

It works on a bass in standard tuning, mostly on the low E string, but it's REALLY noticeable on a 5-stringer or down tuned bass. I think about it like a "growl" button because that's what it sounds like to me. It tracks perfectly, even if you play chords.

It's especially useful on the smaller models like the 110 and 112. Those amps have a tilt-back cabinet. Bass cabs that tilt back tend to lose low end when used that way. This way you can boost lows without eating up headroom. It improves practice with headphones because it "shifts" the bass to where headphones actually work.

What's the lowest note that the built-in tuner responds to?

Is the 300 watt rating RMS or is it just a peak rating for the Max 115?

Does the Max 115 come with a 4 or 8 ohm speaker?

I've tried the tuner down to low Ab, but I don't know if that's the limit. I couldn't see anyone using it much lower than that.

Actual "RMS" power ratings:

115 = 200W
112 = 200W
110 = 100W

The 115, 112, and 110 all use 8 ohm speakers.

I think the 115 is 300W RMS

The psycho acoustic thing is interesting. Peavey licenses Maxxbass - why not use that? Maxbass doesn't growl or sound like distortion is added.

I asked about the tuner because a lot of tuners don't go below standard E, Ab is almost ridiculous but some people actually will use that.

So at 200W RMS through an 8 ohm speaker, the Max 115 is set at about 100 watts.

Was there talk of putting in a 4 ohm speaker to use more power and get closer to 200 watts?

Since the power amp is using class D power, why didn't Peavey decide to pack the Max 115 with 1000 watts?

I've heard that constructing high wattage class D power amps isn't very much more expensive than constructing lower wattage class D power amps.

The Max 115 is actually 300 watts into 8ohms.

What's ironic is that when I called Sweetwater the sales guy who is a bass player told me he actually preferred the GK MB112 II over the Peavey Max 112. Lighter weight and he swore by the bottom end and tone, and versatility of adding more powered cabinets designed for the combo line. I think there will even be a GK 110 powered cab.

However, I have 25 year old Peavey amps that I've taken care of and they just keep on kicking, sounding great. I have come to really like the signature Peavey sound, with my Ibanez basses. I always get compliments, and the combination has a nice very distinct growlly tone.

The Specs on the site and what uyour posting are not jiving.
Us Bass player's usually want to know the following.

How many watts it to what ohm load (listing both 8&4)

what is the ohm of the speaker?

What is weight?

What are the deminsions?

etc.........

I'd love to see something like a 200 watt into 4 ohms combo with a 4 ohm 8 inch speaker and a DI. Now that would be something different.

No, it's set at 200Wrms with the internal 8 ohm speaker. You can't put a 4 ohm speaker in it to get more power.

Higher power class D amps themselves are usually only slightly more, but the power supply needed to run them is where they get more expensive.

So you are saying the specs on the website are incorrect?

Everything except for the power rating is correct. It's 200Wrms into 8 ohms.

The 8" speaker's life would be too short for you to enjoy it.

Yeah, now that you mention it, the specs seem off. But if you go to the Peavey news page, they're listed as 100, 200, and 300 watts into 8 ohms. Go figure??????
