First, thanks to all who replied to my thread last week...
8 ohm cab vs 4ohm cab
I had been looking at several cabs and heads, and didn't find anything in my budget that overwhelmed me. But tucked away back in the corner of a small music store, was a used Genz Benz 410. I fired it up, it sounded nice and solid, and started to negotiate. After settling on a nice price, it was soon loaded up and on it's way home. It's a 400W 8ohm, but that's all I know about it. No other markings/designations of any kind...even the GB website couldn't help me as to the model. Also, on the back of the cab, there's a dial that I assume is for the tweeter, but I'm not sure what it should be normally set at?
As far as the head, I saw a couple of used ones at GC that were iffy. Some were priced right, but they were either pretty old or well-used. There were several deals on more expensive heads, but I was pretty restricted with my budget. Since the used Ampegs and GK 700 & 1001 RB's were beyond my price range, I went back to craigslist. Saw a few that may have worked, but the wife suggested that I spend a little extra money on a new one, since I'd be getting a warranty and have the possibility of returning it. (Can't argue with her on that logic!)
I still didn't want to break the bank, so I ended up with a GK Backline 600. I've only played it for about three hours, spent mostly fiddling with the knobs and finding different tones. I am a little disappointed so far as the E string is exceptionally boomy, even with the 'Bass' settings turned down all the way. I have flats (Chromes) on my P, and even changed them to my GHS Boomers (rounds) to see if that would brighten up the low end. It did a little, but not enough to keep them on, so I changed back to the Chromes. I don't know if that boominess is due to the amp or the cab, but hopefully I can find that setting that doesn't rattle the walls when playing the E. Any suggestions will be appreciated!
