New rig tip. (ohm thing)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, i hope someone can help me with my question.

I currently play a Hartke rig. (4x10's) with a head thats 350w @ 4ohm 240w @ 8 ohms.(i think thats right)

Anyway, i'm looking to get a smaller cab, and the GK lightweight looks pretty good. But they have a few diferent ones.

They got a 200w 4ohm 15', or a 600w 4ohm 2x10.

My question is; will my 350w head push enough for the 600w cab? Should i go with the 200w? or the 400w 8ohm?

Thanks guys, any tips are appreciated.

John

It'll be enough to drive the 210, yes. It will also, most likely, be louder than a single 15. Though you could go for 2 8ohm 15s? That would be a great sound.

Do not worry...........there is no such thing as being "underpowered".

Anyway.....that 600 watt rating is only a thermal rating for the voice coil to fry at a given test frequency - not what it can actually handle. Most commercial speakers hit their mechanical limits (over excursion/farting out) at 1/2 rated power or less depending on how heavy you use EQ.

oh, 2 8ohm 15's...i didnt even think of that!! It could be sexy

Thanks a lot guys. I am leaning toward the 210's. I play small places, usually with no PA support, but i'm getting too old to lug my 4x10's around. But I should be able to get the full benefit of my 350w head with the 210.

or maybe even 2 15's....... i'll keep ya updeated.

Thanks again

I definitely understand 'getting too old to lug' your rig around. I'm only 46, but I sure feel older than that. I downsized a LOT not long before I quit gigging. I went from an Acoustic B4 head on top of an Acoustic TC-210P cab on top of a Randal 2x15 cab to an SWR Redhead on top of an SWR Triad.

With the B4 running both internal power amps bridged into the 2x15 and using the preamp out into the internal amp of the TC-210P, I was running about 760 Watts. But it weighed about 350 pounds. Thank God for casters.

The SWR rig is only about 200 pounds. But it's also about 300 Watts and not as efficient at cutting through a mix as the old enormo-rig.

So 200 pounds is easier that 350. But I think seventy five or a hundred would be even easier. I'm thinking I want one of those high power micro-tiny heads like a LMIII or one of the similarly tiny GK or Genz-Benz units. And I need it to go into the lightest high-power cab I can find.

And then I STILL want roadies. Maybe little person roadies to move my hypothetical little rig.

Does Craigslist have a section for that?

Well, I went with the 2x12 600w @ 4ohm. It should arrive on monday. I'll report what I find out after playing with it a bit. I'll be using my older Hartke 3500 (350w @ 4ohm) for now

I do hope to save up for a nice GK amp. maybe i'll be able to treat myself for x-mas

Thanks for the advice guys. I dont have a gig til next month, and I hope to use this cab for it.( it's a nice small club. 2x12's should do me good)

Thanks again all

Which G-K 2x12 did you get? The Neo 212-II? The 212MBE?..

I went with the 212 MBE. I'm really happy with it. Nice sound from 2 12's. And the weight is fantastic. Nice and smooth. I do get a buzz from the tweeter, but it has a switch to turn it off, which i did.

I also picked up the ultra light 500w head. fantastic. Really happy with this head I'm actually thinking of adding the ultra light '15 to go with the 12's for the extra lows.
