New Speakers for an Old Cab

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Ashdown 2x10 MAG Deep cab that I was thinking about getting rid of....but now I am pretty much resigned to keeping it for when I play larger venues and need an extension cab.

Thinking about replacing the speakers in it, though. I have a Genz Benz NeoX 112 cab that is my main cab, I found a place (thanks to the search feature on this site!) to get a grille replacement for the Ashdown to match the Genz....and thinking of some Neo speakers for the Ashdown, or maybe just regular replacement speakers. The ones in it now are 8 ohm and 250 Watts total for the cab.

Anyone have a favorite? or a good recommendation?

This is a ported cab, right? When nothing is broken i wouldn't mess with the speakers because it will be really difficult to find a good match to the cab. What you have to do is take all the internal measurements of the cab and enter it in cab modeling software and then enter the Thiele Small specifications of different speakers and see what happens. You also need to know what exactly it is you want the cab to do better. It is not about simply buing better speakers and putting them in.

Do a search, because a lot of people have asked this very question.

+1 to the above. If it ain't broke...

If it is broke I would just get whatever Ashdown recommends as a replacement for the cab.

Thanks guys. Yes it is a ported cab. I guess if it is an extension cab it is getting about its rated wattage anyway...I guess I don't HAVE to replace them...I'm lucky in that way. Just going to replace the grille and give it a better look with the Genz sitting on top of it.
