Newb question re effects loops

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so my amp has an effects loop (in/out) but I can also just plug my bass into the input of the effects box, and the output of that into the input of the amp. Is there any difference? Should I be doing it one way over the other?

confused!

If you are using a "stompbox" type effects unit, it is meant to accept instrument level signal.

Effects loops are line level, and are meant more for rackmount pro level gear.

The FX loop interrupts the signal between the pre-amp and the power-amp. It's generally for line-level signals only. And even at that, some work better in front of the pre than in the loop. If you're using a delay that has adjustable level controls, it could work very well in the loop, but a distortion pedal or a compressor probably wouldn't even if it was line level.

You plug your instrument into the amp's input. Then you come OUT of the FX send INTO the effect's input. OUT of the effects OUTPUT IN to the FX return.

+1 the amp's loop is meant for rack gear, (generally), so going bass-fx pedal- amp's input is correct.

I used to run a separate preamp and power amp with a rack compressor in between.

Now that I have just got an EA Micro, if I still want to run the same compressor, would I put in in the effects loop with the return at 100% wet?

The issue of whether I would be defeating the purpose of having a micro amp by running a 1U size compressor rather than a small compressor pedal is a separate issue that I still have to work on.
