Newbie bass amp question

Sign in to disble this ad
My bf gave me an electric bass and "entry level" Traynor 10 Watt bass combo amp for Xmas. I just plan to noodle around with it a little when we have casual jamm sessions with friends and I'm sure will not elevate to a serious obsession (though one never knows!)

My problem is that the amp is made in China and absolutely REEKS of mothballs! It is stinking up my house and is now in the basement waiting to be returned. My bf was told it is a good entry level amp. I need something cheap that doesn't smell bad around $100. Marshall makes a little 15 watt job for $115... is there something else I should be looking at?

Sorry if this is a trivial question for all you hardcore bass enthusiasts! :-)

My first amp was a Laney RB-3. 65 watts. Cost me £150, but I think they are more like £100 now. So you should be able to get one between $150-200 new. Sure you could get one for less used. There are also the smaller Laneys which will be cheaper. I'm not really one for practise amp knowledge though. My only other amp is a 750 watt monster. =P

10 watts? If that's all you need look on CL, there will be about a million 15 watt Crate bass amps for about 35 bucks. I have 3 or 4 of them I never use. I give them out to neighbor kids at Halloween.

They actually sound pretty decent for as small as they are.

If you're playing in the 10 watt range you can really play through most any amp, including guitar amps. At this wattage most people are just trying to hear what they're doing while practicing, or playing with acoustic instruments or other electric instruments at a very very low volume. If that's the case, most anything you can find should be suitable.

I'll have to say though, I've never heard of an amp that smells of mothballs. But since it does, I'd think that a little cleaning with vinegar would take care of it.

there are plenty of $100 dollar amps for $50 used on craigslist. at this level, there is
no 'best' one.

you might try setting it outside on a sunny day to off-gas the amp. the smell wont last
forever

good luck on the bass. lotsa resources here to chk out!

Try the Acoustic Brand Amps.. I use a B-100 when I play but I practice and kick around with the B-20, there is a B-10 for about a $100.00 very stable great sounding amps..
