Newbie question: How to hook up cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a lot of homework and searched all over the forums for answers. I think I have a good idea of how to proceed, but I just want to double check.

I recently bought a Traynor YBA-200 off eBay. 200W all tube amp. Wonderful. Problem is, it's my first time using a non-combo amp.

I'm now looking for a cab (if anyone has recommendations, shoot) and have narrowed it down to a Eden EX410.

Now the big question: How do I hook up a head to the cab? The Traynor has two 1/4" outputs in the back. The Eden has (I think) one 1/4" input and 2 Speakon inputs. Do I take just one speaker cable and hook up one output to one input? Or do I take two speaker cables (probably 1/4" one end, Speakon other end) and hook both inputs to the two outputs?

I've combed over the manual and everything, and as far as I can tell, I just need to connect one output to one input. Is that right?

Thanks!

One output to one input. Usually multiple outputs on a head are for hooking up more cabs. Multiple inputs on cabs are for hooking them together in some way. Someone will probably correct me If im wrong. I only use one head and one cab.

And it might be safe ---- or not - to have the head fired up with no cabinets on it.

I've heard horror stories of tube amps going smoke-o with no speaker load on the other end.

Actually that leads right in to my next question. I have not turned on the head since getting the thing, so I actually have no idea if it works (I assume it does... Well it better work!).

Can I turn it on with standby ON with no speakers connected, just to see if the head works? Or better to get a cabinet first?

The two speakons are actually 1 input and 1 link(output). Well i think so at least. I havent used that particular cab but thats how i have always seen them.

Don't turn it on without speakers connected to it.

That's all you can do till you get a cab. Keeping it in standby keeps signal from going through the transformers, so that's OK, but don't take it out of standby for any reason, and don't plug a bass into it either.

Also, make sure the impedance (ohmage to you tyros) of the cab matches the impedance specified for the head. This is especially important for all-tube heads. Since this head has an impedance selector switch, you can get either a 4-ohm or 8-ohm cab. Just make sure the switch on the amp is set to the correct impedance.
