Hey there,
I have a mesa boogie walk about head (which I love) but it isn't loud enough for the louder gigs I am doing. I have a 650 watt power amp that I would like to use with a nice preamp. Any suggestions? I have a avatar 4 10 cab and and aguilar 1 12 which I plan on getting another maybe 2 10 to stack on top.
Anyways, any help with a preamp would be awesome.

I just replaced it with an Ampeg SVP Pro because I wanted that all-tube Ampeg sound. To be perfectly honest, I can't tell much difference between the SansAmp and the Ampeg until I get near the max of the tube distortion range. And I never play with that much distortion when I'm gigging, anyway.
PM me if you're interested in buying my SansAmp RBI. Mods: it's OK, I'm a supporting member! |

Otherwise you're going to get every TBer recommending what they use.
Preamps all sound kinda different, so it may help describing what your tone goals are. |

| | | | You can't go wrong a BBE-Bmax-T, the price is right and it's such a nice warm, round sound. The tube actually makes a difference, you have a built in compressor, sonic maximizer and semi-parametric EQ which make it top class. Check out the reviews on here and at Harmony Central. |

Alternately, head over to the basstasters website and listen to all the recordings that Todd VanSelus and friends did of various preamps. That is a very useful resource. They even have clips of a Walkabout being used as a preamp (I think that's my Walkabout, actually - I sent Todd a bunch of pres/heads to test).

the walkabout does 300 watts at 4 ohms, that ought to be pretty loud with the right cab combination might want to consider that approach also
Eden Navigator is a good preamp, as are the demeter offerings.

| | | | +1 if you like the tone of your walkabout why not just get more of it and save yourself some dough. if you don't like it its no loss.

| | Registered User | | | | | Hey. Thanks everyone who replied, I guess I never thought of just using the mesa a pre amp into the power amp... That might be the way to do it, seeing as I love the sound of the mesa.
Thanks! |

I don't use the compressor or maximizer, just use it as a straight, warm, full "clean" preamp that isn't harsh and biting like most SS preamps. I have a MESA Big Block 750 here right now and when I do an A-B test I prefer the BMax-T sound over it. At least today. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
