No PA support-whaddaya use for cab(S)?

Small bar type gigs 500<. Rock.

Love my Bag End 1XS12+1XS15 stack. Nice tone and I know I can be heard ok, but I'm thinking about the low end in the back of the room.

What works for you?

Ampeg 810cl

fEARful 15/6/1. But I still want to build a 15 sub to REALLY fill a room.

2x Schroeder 15+L cabs (got 'em from an amazing player & super sweetheart of a TB brother in Madison!)

Powered ably by GB Streamliner 6.0 (got it from another, equally talented and nice TB brother in Madison!)

Now if I could just stop playing bass like such a guitar player...

christw 12-24-2012 07:24 PM

In about two weeks I'll be using either my Big E 2 x 6's or a W bin Kustom 118B loaded with a Faital 18FH500 and an Alpha 6 CBMRA from 800 Hz up.

fEARful 1212/6/1 does it for me...

Stone Soup 12-24-2012 07:44 PM

I don't do clubs with over a hundred patrons, without PA support. Ever heard the term "stupid loud"? There's a reason it's called that. ;)

modulusman 12-24-2012 07:47 PM

I don't consider a 500 capacity bar small. Always have PA but when I want to look cool I use my Genz Benz Uber stack.:D

fEARful 15/6

Really fills out the sound & takes eq well.

love it!

Rebop 12-24-2012 08:13 PM

Old Genz Benz 4x10xb. Good for almost any venue.

bassman10096 12-24-2012 08:14 PM

Old school: Mesa Powerhouse 410 on top of a PH 115. Power to spare.

rodl2005 12-24-2012 08:19 PM

Bergantino NV412 usually. Solid solid & tight lows.

+1
4-500 peeps needs real PA, period.

trying to blast low end from stage just wrecks the mix for everybody else in the band and still doesn't make it to the back.

your bass rig never needs to be any louder than the acoustic drums are.

Tim1 12-24-2012 09:21 PM

Bergantino NV215 covers most eventualities for me, with or without PA support. If there is no FOH support I suppose I would just turn it up as necessary, but to be honest I can't imagine doing 100+ without at least a touch going through the subs.

B-string 12-24-2012 10:14 PM

G-K NEO412, not a problem :D

Better to have to much, than not enough.

I think sometimes we grossly overestimate how much we need as bass players. A 500 seat joint, while not small, is also not big. And making it to the back of the room with a 112 and a 115 and a decently powered amp should be fairly easy in all but the most ear-splitting of cases. And when you're doing stage volume gigs, the idea should be the same as when you do a full PA gig...make the music sound balanced. How much do you need for that? I think Walter's advice about using the acoustic drums as a guide is sound.

Downunderwonder 12-25-2012 12:07 AM

You and me can play 500 people with a little rig but this is TB dude.
