Noisy fan on Little Mark II - Easy fix (pics)

Hey,

I just wanted to share this. Bought a used Markbass Little Mark II and it was fine, except that the fan was very, very noisy. Rattling like those cheap computer fans after a year or two of use.

It was an easy fix though, just one drop of oil.

The tools needed: something pointy and sharp (I used a mat knife), a larger screwdriver, a smaller screwdriver and oil. The air blow thingie is optional, I used it to remove the dust from inside the case. Like a computer, these things collect dust even though they look compact, so it could be a good idea to clean it every now and then.

Now for the oil: Don't use WD-40 or something that's meant for cleaning/degreasing! Apart from that, anything will do, regular mechanical or household oil. I used some all-round mechanical oil I got from a huge barrel at my father's place.

Start with removing the top cover by unscrewing the screws (one marked with white arrow above):

You can access the fan from inside, too. However, you'll only need to hold it in place while performing the mainteance, nothing more:

Now use the larger screwdriver to remove the grill from the fan. The screws that hold the grill also holds the fan in place, that's why I left one there for easier assembly:

Pull off the sticker. The mat knife was good for getting the start:

Take out the small rubber plug using something pointy:

Let a drop of oil (just ONE is enough!) fall into the hole onto the metal:

Reassemble and you're done! My LMII now works like new, and if I'm not mistaken, it doesn't get as warm.

REMEMBER: Don't do this if your amp still has warranty! The sticker won't be as shiny once you've taken it off once.

The reason I posted this, although an easy fix, was that I spent a long time searching the net for what to do about the fan, and all I could find was a thread about replacing it entirely. I won't give any guarantees on this, since I'm not a qualified repair person or anything like that. Everything was just common sense, but you're always hesitant on repairing a 400 € amp on your own.
