Non GK speaker replacement for GK cab

Sign in to disble this ad
I have 2 Gallien-Krueger cabs that have been giving me issies and I want to replace the speakers. One is a 410SBX that 2 of the speakers are blown (for no good reason). And the other 115SBX II where the wires on the speaker are jacked up.

I've tried contacting GK directly (both recently and when they were under warranty a few years ago) and got back a 10 word reply saying email someone else, I did, and I haven't heard back.

So now I'm looking to replace the speakers but don't know exactly what to look for, or what is good. The cabs are 8ohms and will be used with a GK 1001RB-II. I play most rock and very aggressively.

The only way I know to begin an exercise like this is to pull the drivers and measure the cab's inside dimensions.

The 1x15 is ported. If it's a shelf port, measure the shelf and measure the port width and length and height. Port width will be equal to the shelf width (left-right). Port length will be equal to shelf length (front-rear). Port height will be distance between the shelf and the bottom of the cab on the inside. Measure the shelf thickness, too.

If it has round ports, measure inside port diameter and tube length.

The 4x10 is sealed, so you won't need to take ports into consideration, but you still have to measure the internal cab dimensions.

Then you can start modeling different drivers inside those cabs.

You'll also have to install damping material if there isn't some already in there (or if it's insufficient).

Maybe someone here has already gone through the exercise for one or both of these cabs and can recommend drivers for you. But even so, I'd still go through the modeling exercise so you can get an approximation of what those cabs will do with the drivers you finally decide on, if for no other reason than it'll help you dial in your EQ once everything's buttoned back up. This has paid off for me with two separate pieces of gear I own -- helped me find exactly where the mid-bass peaks were and how bad they were, and I was able to bullseye the parametric center frequency. (Predictability is your friend.)

Bill will hop in and correct any errors I may have made.

First, speakers don't blow "for no good reason". There's ALWAYS a reason. Most likely, since you claim to play aggressively, it's either too much gain, or low end eq. The best spkrs for your cabs are the ones that came with them. They design bass cabs for the speaker, to maximize it's potential. I'd suggest ditching the 15, and using 2x 410's for starters, and replacing, or better yet, re-coning the speakers you have.

I should have said no apparent reason. I let frustration get the best of me there. I play with flat EQ on the amp, with the volume low, my bass in passive mode, and no settings on the amp near what I would consider too much. When I said I play aggressive I meant my physical attack on the bass, not the settings on the amp.

I used the 2 cabs independently for different sounds not together. I am just curious to see what my other options are since I'm having poor luck with GK directly. So far I'm getting the idea this is a lot more difficult than I imagined

^^Factory replacements if you have a change of heart. I have nothing but good things to say about the folks at GK. I had a Backline 210 that I blew the 2 drivers and replaced them with 2 Eminence s2010s.

Thanks for the link, unfortunately GK doesn't list the exact replacements for the cabs I have and haven't gotten back to me. I have been looking into Eminence replacements though, they even have one listed (Legend BP102) as a direct replacement for the 410SBX I have.

Well, after looking around I'm just gonna scrap the cabs and buy something else. Replacement drivers would be more than I pain for the thing
